Sydney India Tourism Office

For those in and around Sydney looking for information on India, there is a India tourism office in Sky Gardens off of Pitt Street Mall in Sydney.

I popped in there today, picked up some great information, loads of free maps etc. When I told the lady that I wanted to go for 6 months, she gave me a simply enormous brick of a travel guide called "India Travel Planner" for free. I won't take it with me as it's so huge, but it's nice to look at and is chock full of info that will keep me busy until I finally get to India.

Their number is +61 2 9264 4855.

The "India Travel Planner" is just awesome, I got one from the India tourism office in London a while ago and it's full of great info. (though I don't know if the London office are still giving them away, I don't think they are)

Sorry to hear about their lack of communication Vandy, the London office is normally so helpful.

From an old post talking about what's available at the tourist offices....

I hit the jackpot last month, I got the 'Destination India Travel Planner, 2005', a 27 cm long, 20 cm wide 560 page colour travel planner that they themselves use, it is better than any guidebook I've ever seen.

Yes, sorry to hear that you're not getting any joy from them. They probably get a million emails.

I would give them a quick call and ask them to email YOU with the information you need.

I went to the London office three times. The first two it was closed for religious holidays; the third they seemed to have few publications and less helpfulness.

Just my experience, I guess. I'm glad others have been luckier.

Here are the contact details for the office.

India Tourism,
Level 5, Glass House,
135 King St, Sydney

info@indiatourism.com.au, or www.incredibleindia.org

The girls are hilarious (in that they are very Indian).

Me: I'd like a copy of Destination India Travel Planner 2007 please.
Girl: We do not have sorry (looking a bit suspicious)
Me: ohhhh - do you have the 2006 version?
Girl: Who told you we had them? (ummm, this is a tourism office yes?)
Me: A friend who came and got one last week.
Girl: We only give them out if you are going to India for a long time, and visiting many places.
Me: I'm going to Shimla, Mandi, Chandigarh, Haridwar, Rishikesh....etc

She finally hands a copy over - its like getting teeth pulled to get a copy, but they do have them! Its as thick as a phonebook!

Well this is a vast improvement on the time I first went there in 1995! Not much except very glossy posters and pictures of wafty sari ladies on beach at Chennai. What a shock when I actually went there and saw the state of the 'beach' and the shanty towns opposite!!! Just a thin magazine for a handout, again with glam photos of India, articles of no help whatsoevr etc. did have some info on Indirail train passes however.

Pretty funny. I've only dealt with the drones at the Indian Consulate, and everything is efficient there, too efficient. They must love their jobs. Is this planner better than LP and other Guide books, or am I getting the wrong picture?
