Mahender Singh of Jaipur sells false teeth and dental services near a sidewalk apothecary and alongside a bicycle tire repairman.

He plucked the fruits of his labor, a long yellowed incisor, out of a metal bowl and held it aloft.

"It wasn't working right," the dentist, Mahender Singh, said. "It kept turning left and right when.....

I remember a street dentist in Jaipur I wonder if it was this guy!! He was crouched on the chest of someone when I saw him first, extracting a tooth
I checked his "stall" the second time and was amazed to find him selling second hand false teeth (someone came for a "fitting" as I stood there) !! He also did a line in second hand glasses and repairs!!
My how India's changed!!

I think I'll stick with my Chennai dentist with his thoroughly modern surgery.

But, none-the-less, this guy seems to be a geat deal more than a bloke with a pair of pliers. The reporter also did a decent job without being condescending.

I have photos at home of a street dentist in Varanasi, and it still makes me laugh. It has a huge pair of fake false teeth about a metre wide stuck on a table as an advertisement to the fact.

A woman was doing the 'dentistry' too. My partner and I looked at the pairs of used teeth and the lady offered to give us a fitting, and held up a pair...

We wondered how an earth secondhand teeth would fit our mouths....especially on top of our existing teeth? Unless of course she was proposing she remove our existing teeth with a rather splendid array of pliers, screwdrivers and rusting implements...

In the 16 days I was in Varanasi and walked by her dentists shop, I never saw any patients undergoing treatment.
