Sri Lanka fears renewed civil war

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Four Tamil Tiger rebels were killed in an attack by a rival faction in Sri Lanka early on Tuesday and a soldier was shot dead overnight, police said, as spiraling violence stoked fears of renewed civil war.

Sri Lanka safe for most part

As an regular traveller in Sri Lanka I have been to almost every part during war, tseunami peace etc and as long as you don'go to the Northeast (Trincomali area) your safe (as of right now). Jaffna is Okay if you fly in from Colombo. There has never been in 20 years of on and off war an attack on a traveller. That does not mean you won't inadvertenly stumble into trouble if you don't use your head. Such a beautiful country with beautiful people that cannot get along. Serendipity.

Yes, I think that's true. All through the last civil war tourists and travellers kept visiting Sri Lanka, and very few had any problem. The trouble was all up in the North (quite like here in Ireland!) so as long as you kept away from that region, you were OK. I seem to remember that you couldn't even go there by mistake, as the Army had the roads guarded. The likelihood of trouble to a tourist (I am commenting about only them as that's who IM is for) was confined to 'wrong place at the wrong time' syndrome.

Lets hope a new civil war doesn't happen, but if it does, travellers should not be put off going - rather, they should monitor local news organisations and other sources of local information, and make an informed decision at the time.
