Seven million threatened as floods cut off India and Bangladesh

More than seven million people were in danger last night as the worst floods in more than a decade spread across India, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Entire villages have been swept away. More than 100 people have died in India in the past few days alone, and the waters are still rising.

The scale of the disaster is immense. More than two million people have been left homeless in India's Assam state. Another million are homeless in nearby Bihar. Millions more are trapped in their homes. Many have been forced to take their families on to the roofs.

If this happened in Norway, or Australia, it would be all over the news. But it's India - I wonder if it will get a slot in the uk tonight?

Yeah - I saw it on the beeb. The final comment was on how floods are a repeated problem but the goverment still can't cope (True beeb smug mode!). Maybe true but it's tempting to point out how Britain fails to cope with more than 3 flakes of snow!!

A photograph along with news appeared in today’s daily ‘The Hindu’ on the rescue operations in the flooded parts of Bihar. This is the worst flood India (south Asia) has seen in 20 years.

The term biblical proportions seems very appropiate in describing this disaster, even by Indian standards where large numbers are often the norm this is huge
As Assam and Bangledesh are in a flood basin this also means that it could be weeks before the waters subside.
Posing more health risks in the days and weeks to come.
This is I feel another calamity that has probably been helped along by Deforestation!!
When will we learn!!!

I was in Varanasi last week and the river looked like it had been experiencing drought. It was very dry indeed. Have things changed there in the last few days??

I am planning on driving from Varanasi to Bodh Gaya at the beginning of November - does anyone know if the road, or these cities has been affected by the flood? Has anyone driven that route at any time? I would appreciate any insight or personal experiences! By the way - i am not driving the car myself!
thanks so much!
