bangalore yesterday - ahmedabad today...

there is something quite unnerving about the 'low intensity' of the damage caused...
usually - incidents like these gain world attention because of the catastrophic end-result
just wondering - if this is a prelude to bigger blasts to follow.

like i said - its unnerving.

Not just Gujarat; many parts of India. I don't think the intention of any of the recent bombings has been to kill a few people: it has been to try and goad people into a situation where thousands may die.

Billy, aren't these people paid by the word? They just have to keep on talking. communally sensitive is not actually ridiculous in Indian news; it is just understood to mean an area where communities might be goaded to rise up. It is just one of our Indian news terms --- like 'mishap' for an traffic accident in which dozens may have died.

The upper 8th chyron on CNN-IBN reads: "26 DEAD, OVER 100 INJURED"... these words book-ended by blood splatter graphics. Maybe I'm over-sensitive, having endured American Fox News for too long, but the blood splatter? That's disgustingly insensitive.

Thank you, Nick. I was wondering if that was something new or usual.

Investigation agencies and police in this country are joke really. We saw that in Aarushi murder case how bad they are in investigating things. If they had caught these ppl after Jaipur blasts we wouldn't have these things hapeening. Just wait for the drama to come now. Every news channel will talk of different cyber cafes from which allegedly mail was sent by terrorists, different bicycle stores from where cycles were bought for bombing and then nothing will come out of it. Only thing that happens fast is the announcement of compensation by the goverment and apparently the latest going price for human life is 1 lakh.

I've watching it alternately on AAJTAK and HT and Samay (Rockies USA footprint feeds) (skipping to avoid the ads - I find it surprising they continue with ads - at times like this, for whatever reason(usually financial IMO), the US non-network news channels drop all ads for several hours or even days(cf 9/11) ).

What's IB ? a government investigation branch I guess but? googling doesn't work - two characters is a bit difficult to search on.

Crossposted with mridula. IB is intelligence bureau. They used to block ads and had round the clock coverage but this stuff has unfortunately become routine now.

Intelligence bureau? Just a guess; I missed the original context. (cross-posted with everyone)

It seems that people are turning to DD, the state TV channel, for un-sensationalist news coverage these days, thus increasing its popularity. I read a newspaper article about this; I hardly ever watch any TV myself --- I don't think they do any English-Language channel. If they do, it would be good to know.

But India's news coverage is very raw compared to the sterilized versions many of us have been used to in our mother countries. My newspaper, this morning, features a front-page photograph of the dead woman, lying on the pavement.

DD has news in English on a few channels at least.

Can't help which ones, as hardly watch any news myself.

re: DD and slightly off-topic

Well, well, well, DD must have changed a lot - I recall calling it "Indira Gandhi today" TV.

Sadly, the only DD feeds I can find are on Intelsat at 68.5 degrees East and NSS6 at 95.0 E . I'm at 105 W, damnit.

Back to this issue at hand.

Hi,

Nothing can tear us apart, we will be more stonger by such shameless acts..They can spread the terror but we shall spread life & love around. Thousands of years outsiders have tried to demolish India but ervery time we have proved that our culture & spirits are immortal.

love - India

India's diversity is both boon and bane. While it is difficult to spot odd one out, similarly people can disassociate themselves easily with these acts and carry on with their lives.

The only thing that has remained constant since time immemorial about such acts is the expediency with which govt. announces compensation. Forget about relief, just announce the money. Why can't they do it silently?

These low-intensity blasts immediately after trust vote and during fag end of govt term sounds more than a coincidence.
