Rohtang Tunnel Project for all-weather Connectivity

Rohtang Tunnel Project to be commissioned by 2011

Shimla, May 06: The Rohtang Tunnel Project would be commissioned by the end of 2011 at an estimated cost of Rs 1697 crore, providing all-weather connectivity to the Lahaul Valley and helping the economy of the region, a senior border roads organisation official said here today.

"International bidding for awarding contract for the construction of tunnel had been invited and 12 companies including some foreign companied had been shortlisted," Brigadier K P Singh, chief engineer, Deepak project, Bro told reporters here.

He said the contract would be given to one single company for the construction of 8.9 km long tunnel beneath mighty Rohtang Pass (3978 mt high), which would reduce the distance between Manali and Sarchu in tribal Lahaul Valley by 46 km.

More details.

Ah yes, the Rohtang tunnel again. I remember travelling on the south portal access road and observing the crews working industriously on the north portal access road in 1991. By the next time I visited those locations, in 1993, all construction activity had ceased, and the only indication that there ever was such a project was the weathered governmental sign lying face-down in a field alongside the disused north portal road. Since then, there have been a few bursts of activity on the project, and a lot of talk. Maybe it will really happen this time. The article describes plans for a 14.8 km tunnel from a south portal near Manal to a north portal near Palchan, which is the project I have been familiar with over the years. However, the article also mentions an additional "1.2 km" tunnel from Palchan to Sarchu. Anyone familiar with the geography of the region will realize that such a tunnel would have to bore through the great Himalaya range in the area of Baralacha La! There seems to have been a slight miscalculation there.
