Unfortunately I was not aware about the actual reasons behind the issue, however I have just read the Tehelka link...
It seems to be Political issue and Comrades VS people kind of story, but its really sad, can anyone enlighten me about the stand of the center on this ? |

For discussion of the issues, please go to this thread here.
Can we keep this thread to current news about the situation in Kolkatta, and how it might affect travellers heading there? It would be good to hear from our members there too to know that they are OK. |

In any country, and certainly in India, travelers would be well advised to steer clear of heated masses. To friends of mine this has included staying in their hotel rooms, but this was at times of mass disrupt though. Stuff like this tends to mostly bypass the fleeting visitor, but it's always good to keep abreast of events, of course.

Nandigram is not the actual issue. They want visa of Ms.Taslima Nasrin(Bangladeshi writer, now Swedish citizen)should not be extended. The minority hardliners claim that she has written something insulting to 'Paigambar'in the book 'Lajja'.Ultimately they claim her head for this offence. Now the situation is under control and it will not hamper the travellors.

Nick as angry as those villagers might be i dont think they can cause problems on the scale that affect whole kolkota and need army to be called in. and local intellectual kolkotains might bring out peacefu rally in protest as they did but they wont go rioting in the city putting in denger their own life and others. This definetly looks like work of ppl who dont want visa of Ms.Taslima Nasrin to be revoked and kick her out. they have tried to attack her before too. These ppl need to be controlled.
