King Momo led the carnival parade in Goa's capital Panjim, marking the beginning of celebrations of the colourful vibrant festival.
The festival will go on for the next three days before Catholics enter the season of Lent. Revelry, pageantry, loud music and dance marked the carnival parade as the young and the old, decked up in colourful outfits, took to the streets dancing. The parade displayed all that's afflicting the state from sex tourism to child abuse and Goa's fragile ecology and the latest scare - bird flu. More |

Well, it's a pity that the carnival these days is a mere shadow of what it was earlier. Mostly 'hijacked' by companies advertising themselves on floats etc.
Things be as they may, an interesting thing to note that one of the original reasons behind the revelrey of the carnival was to give people the opportunity to clean up (empty) the larders prior to Lent... things make so much more sense when viewed from an anthropoligical viewpoint, don't they? nevilleb |
