Red Fort
And Finally the Red Fort at Delhi in the tourist itinerary. This gigantic monument in Delhi is handed over from defense ministry to the tourism ministry yesterday. The 17-century fort was used by Indian Army as a garrison since 1947.The Red Fort or Lal Qila (made out of red sand stone hence the name) is expected to be declared as a UN world heritage center shortly. Many of the spectacular interiors were not open to the tourists as this has been the seat of power throughout its four-century old history. This was built by the Mughal rular Shahjahan (who built the Taj ) as a royal residence cum fortress . The Red fort houses many spectacular halls, residential places, a mosque and a fine carved garden.
This massive fortress alone is a splendid display of the ancient Indian architecture and craftsmanship at its peak. Many of the places within the fort were not been open to the public to visit. |

Found the Red Fort very disappointing because you aren't allowed in anything... not even the open pavilions... everything roped off. Hopefully this will change now the army have left and the tourist people are taking over. As it is, there are much better forts to visit in India.

The Sound and Light Show at the Red Fort is quite wonderful. Three times a rider tells the emperor that Nadir Shah's raiding army is approaching to sack the city--and three times he is ignored. There is a huge conflagration of battle noise that dissolves into the sound of a single woman sobbing.

Agree with Merchant. We did the sound & light show at Golonda this year and it is also well done.

For those who are *really* interested, there is a book called "Three Mughal Poets," published by Penguin India. Mir Hasan, writing in Urdu, was the chronicler of Delhi's fall and the end of that period of Mughal reign. The book contains some translations of his poetry, along with an excellent prose account of the sacking of Delhi and the terror that followed. I assume that much of the Sound and Light show is drawn from Mir's work.

I would definitely visit again if they manage to restore the whole waterworks system.

Unfortunately, I've never seen the sound and light show at the Red Fort.
However, as a comparison between two structures, I feel the Agra Fort is better.
