Red Fort added to UNESCO World Heritage list

Hailing the Red fort as a "representative of all phases of Indian history", UNESCO has put the majestic monument on the World Heritage Site list. The Mughal fort becomes the 27th monument from India, and the third from Delhi, to get the prestigious tag.

I hope this restores some lost glory of this fort. The jewellery vendors and eateries should be moved out from inside. Has the army moved out of fort? They had their barracks inside and some of my friends studying in Kdendriya Vidyalaya used to live there. The approach and periphery around fort should also be beautified.

yes the army has moved out...

however the vendors are part of original legacy, Meena Bazaar was setup by the emporer himself and is almost as old as the fort..

Just to add delhi has become the second cisty in India with 3 World heritage sites...the first been Agra..

On second thoughts I agree with you about the vendors but I recall a tea/coffee/snacks shop inside the last time I visited which cretainly should be thrown out.

if its there..then it should either be thrown out..or given a shape of canteen and should be eco-friendly..so that thousands of tourists visiting can actually benefit from it..

Yes, that is the good news, as the Red Fort had to face a tough competition form other hopefuls from the world over.

I thought Ranthambhor was on the list for either the natural park or historic fortress? At any rate it should be considered.

Hi all,

Just dropping in for the first time in a while...

I'm pleased to see the Red Fort join the list - there is so much history in its walls: The Moghuls, 1857, etc.

Although I must say that I think Alchi Gompa should have been higher in the list, but that's just my opinion.

My current residence, Oman, has just suffered a richly deserve indignity at the hands of Unesco. The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary has become the first site to be removed from the World Heritage List. The number of Oryx has decreased by about 80% since the creation of the WHS, and the government now plans to drill for oil there.

Cheers

Rob

Sadly no Steve. I haven't got cable TV.
But... I'm back in the UK now, so I'm catching up on the sport for now!
