Question Recent Pakistani troop movements....

What should I make of the recent troop movements in Pakistan?? I have been planning a trip to India this March for a while now and am begining to wonder if it will be safe to travel in the north with the recent escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The north meaning Delhi, Varanasi, Agra Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer is the place I am most interested in traveling to. I hear the indian army is training at the base there. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/a...ow/3872395.cms

Should I continue to make plans for this trip or should I put this trip off for another time?

There are always tensions of one sort or another in India. And there are army bases everywhere. (India has the 2nd largest army on earth) Who can tell what will happen in 3 months?

I'd say carry on with your plans and if things are bad in March you can easily head south or east.

In this case, it should be the safest place in India!

Hope you have a god trip - enjoy it and don't worry about stuff.

Cheers

India keeps its heavy weapons and armor well back from the border, to avoid provoking anything major. The Pakistanis are always moving troops around along the Border. It gives them something to do, I guess, when they're not overthrowing the government.

If you're in Jaisalmer and you see a bunch of tanks and trucks and artillery moving toward the Border, you might want to leave. Otherwise, just chill and enjoy the desert. India doesn't scare easily.

Hi there,
Don't worry about the escalating tensions over here. It happens all the time(both Governments enjoy shadow-boxing like this) I don't think either Pakistani or Indian citizens bother to much about it either. Over-the-border skirmishes have been always going on but both countries and more so, Pakistan, cannot afford a war (and both countries are aware of it) If you do feel squeamish, stay away from the border areas.
Come over, and have a great time...

Bend, Oregon . . . what a place! I have very good memories of Bend and vicinity . . . very good friends there . . . great memories of Deschuttes river trips and Black Butte . . the Metolius . . .

For as long as I've been going to India (first trip in '82) seems like something's been happening between India and Pakistan, at some border region. I got myself pretty cranked-up in '89 before I went, reading our governments postings on places in the world to avoid. Seems that India, specifically Delhi, was on their "don't go" list. I went. National elections were in full swing, and India - unlike some other countries I know/live in - takes their elections seriously. Delhi was unusually quiet . . . as was Varanasi . . . and Calcutta . . . Amritsar (where I crossed into Pakistan); I had a great time. And know you will.

Avoid Kashmir, that's where the action is. Nothing much has happened along the other borders since 1971.
