Rains: 54 killed in Mah, Mumbai life paralysed
Raigad/mumbai, July 26:
Heavy incessant rains on Tuesday set off floods and landslides claiming at least 54 lives in Raigad district of Maharashtra and battered normal life throwing rail, road and air traffic in the metropolis in disarray. In more bad news, weathermen here said heavy to very heavy rains will continue for next 48 hours with gutsy wind having a speed of 45 kms to 60 kms per hour. The rains paralysed road, rail and air traffic leading to suspension of long distance and suburban trains putting millions of commuters returning home from offices in an ordeal. Even cell phone lines were badly hit putting those stranded due to inundation of streets into difficulties. Full Report at: http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=51531 |

The majority who commute by train, are the worst hit. My cousin who left work on Tuesday spent the entire night in a BEST bus. This is still better than the thousands who got trapped in the trains. You can't go ahead, you can't get out of the train into flood waters.
Even as on Wednesday afternoon 12:00 he has not come back home. Till last night when phones were working, he was OK. All mobile networks are down. The Chief Minister appealed on Wednesday morning for everyone to stay at home. It is still raining, but the ferocity has become less. Most people will reach their homes by Wednesday evening; & go to sleep for 15 hours. Still scant transport, trains not yet started fully. MTNL landline phones are working in South Mumbai, at least. Its a miracle that my internet is working. Thanks; God

Our flight was cancelled this morning from London. We are booked on another one tomorrow. Does anyone have any idea if the airport is likely to be open by then? Many thanks and hope everyone is safe.

Airport at Mumbai
As per the latest report, Mumbai airport runway has been cleared for landings (whatever that means?), but with rains receeding and situation returning to normal slowly, tomorrow the airport is expected to be open. Incidently, yeaterday night it rained 94 Cm at mumbai which broke 95 years record of rain in a span of 12 hrs. last was sometime in 1905 at Cherapunji which was 82 Cm in 12 hrs.
hope u reach tomorrow and enjoy your trip. but expect some difficulties at Mumbai because every thing is not fully normal yet. It would take some more time for this vibrant city to bounce back to normal.

Update...
Indians Recover 200 Bodies From Monsoon BOMBAY, India - Authorities have recovered at least 200 bodies in western India after the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the country, an official said Wednesday. "Approximately 200 dead bodies have already been recovered" in Maharashtra state, R.R. Patil, the state's deputy chief minister, told The Associated Press. He said the figure included 83 dead in Bombay, the state capital and financial hub. Another 100 deaths were feared across the state, which has been pounded by incessant rainfall since Tuesday, he said. The rain shut down Bombay, snapping communication lines and closing airports. The deaths were caused by electrocution, people getting trapped in cars, drowned in swirling flood waters and buried by falling walls. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050727/.../india_monsoon http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=51537 |

Just managed to get in touch with my sister-she waded through waist-high water for five hours to get from her office to her home. Thankfully she is Ok. Hope everyone's relatives and friends are safe.

My boyfriend is in Mumbai at the moment and when I heard what was going on I was very worried. Couldn't contact him for the longest time. I finally got through to his cousin's mobile which randomly disconnected me. He says you have to swim in the streets and his aunt lost her house. Quite the bad situation I would say. I also wish luck to everyone there at the moment. Be safe y'all!

Yet another reminder that man is powerless against nature.
When will man stop abusing nature ?

Thursday mornin
Good morning Mumbai folks,
Its Thursday mornin' and all of have reached home... some after two days. By this evening we will all recover and go to the beach to eat bhelpuri or whatever. Some of us have lost our houses, but loving neighbors will help us back to living a normal life. Difficult to keep Mumbai down; even our own local ver. of 9/11 couldn't. Mumbai is recovering, and FAST!!! |
