Rail track, ropeways to ease Shimla rush.

By Baldev S. Chauhan, Indo-Asian News Service

Shimla, Aug 7 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh is planning a narrow railway track to ring Shimla in a bid to ease traffic congestion in the popular tourist resort.

The Himachal Pradesh Town and Country Planning Department has approached the Rail India Techno-Economic Services (RITES) to conduct a feasibility study to build a narrow railway track looping Shimla town," a government official said.

Shimla is already connected by a century-old narrow railway track from the plains at Kalka. With 103 tunnels, the 96-km track winds through scenic mountain terrain and woods.

"This step is being taken to streamline public transport from growing traffic congestion as the hill resort is a round-the-year destination for holidaymakers," the official said.
