Rail Budget: Lalu cuts 1st AC, 2nd AC fares
February 24, 2006 12:41 IST
Last Updated: February 24, 2006 13:11 IST There is no increase in passenger fares in the Rail Budget for 2006-07. Presenting the Railway Budget in the Lok Sabha on Friday, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad announced reduction in AC first class by 18 per cent and AC-II by 10 per cent. Passenger tariff structure will be rationalised so that that the fares of AC first class and AC second class will be 11.5 times and 6.5 times the second-class fares, respectively. Lalu also announced the introduction of 55 new trains. A fully air-conditioned 'Garib Rath' (poor's chariot) will be run on a pilot basis with four pairs of services, fares being about 25 per cent lower than present AC-III tier fares. Renewal period of monthly season tickets (MSTs) has been increased from three days to ten days and the superfast charges applicable on MSTs and quarterly season tickets (QSTs) reduced to one-fourth of the current level. Tariff fixation mechanism for military traffic to be rationalised and simplified. Prasad said there will be no across the board increase in freight rates and rationalisation of goods traffic will continue further. The number of commodities groups will be reduced from 80 to 28. With lowering of the highest class to 220, freight rates of diesel and petrol will be less by 8 per cent. Over the next three years, the highest class to be lowered below 200 and rates for the highest classification to be made less than double that of the lowest classification (except rates of some light commodities). All free pass holder should go in garib rath and sould not be allowed in rajdhanis.
Also, rajdhani's like that of ranchi/bbsr, which do not have enough patronage can be stopped in future. |

No mention of the Indrail Pass fare increases, yet again
They haven't changed for years !!! 530 USD for 90 days unlimited travel on A/C 2 tier. Free food too, on the Rajdhanis !! And all for about 3 pounds and 35 pence per day. Its cheaper than most hotels!! Tim in Ireland

How ironic that on a day when in India, a so-called 'developing nation', there is all this wonderful news about extra services, trains, and routes for the world-leading Indian Railways network, a story appears in the London Times reporting that the British Rail system is about to receive its biggest cuts since the Beeching closures of the 1960s.

Very sad, Tim. Especially the impact on the West Country.
Cornwall is i) very dependent on its tourist industry; ii) one of the poorest areas of the country. |

Contrary to what many here may think, all Americans aren't well-off, and many have NEVER been on a plane to get around. They get around on buses and trains. AMTRAK, even tho is is passenger rail, also delivers mail to many rural parts of the country......
