Queen of Hills dresses up for tourist influx

Queen of hills dresses up for tourist influx

Raju Gusain
Mussoorie, April 8

In the coming tourist season, the Queen of the Hills is all set to woo visitors like never before. With improved facilities and a facelift, the famous hill station has much to offer guests this time.
To maintain and restore the British period look, 'antique' wrought iron lampposts, signposts, railings, benches and 'Hawa Ghars' have been installed. The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) has put in impressive work to recreate the ambience of colonial times.
Even the historic Clock Tower here at Landour has been restored to its past glory. Similarly, visitors will find a much-improved 'Gandhi Dwar', the gate to Mussoorie.
Besides beautification, improved sanitation and tourist friendly measures are also being put into place.
Hotel owners are excited at the ongoing beautification work. Indicating this, Ramkumar, Secretary of the Mussoorie Hotel Association, says: "Mussoorie now looks even more beautiful. We are looking forward to a good tourist season this year."
The tourist season here peaks in the two-month period between 15 May and 15 July, but Mussoorie is now slowly evolving as a year-round destination. Annually, some eight lakh visitors spend their vacations in Mussoorie.
There are some 150 hotels here and it has become compulsory to display the tariff, thereby eliminating the extortion of the past. Highlighting this, K.P Singh, SDM of Mussoorie, says, "We have instructed hotels to display the rate list and other specifications about rooms. Additionally, we are making serious efforts this season to curb incidents of tourists being cheated by hotel staff in the context of room tariff and other malpractices. The licence of hotels not following these instructions will be cancelled."
The Mussoorie Municipality too is finalising plans for the coming season. Manmohan Mall, Chairman of the Mussoorie Nagar Palika, confirms that, "Sixty additional 'Safai Karamcharis' will be employed on contract basis during the peak tourist season to keep Mussoorie clean. We are also working out a strategy for better management of cycle rickshaws and ponies."
The Mall Road has always remained a favorite of the visitors, as they find it a wonderful experience to walk along and shop at this popular spot. The entry of vehicles, cycles and horses has been banned on the Mall Road from 4:30 to 10 PM, to felicitate free movement of vacationers.
Presently, beautification and other tourism development work here is underway on war footing. This summer, visit Mussoorie to experience a new and improved Queen of the Hills.

I love Mussoorie soooo much. I am excited to go back and see the changes.

Rajugusain, I see you're from Dehra Dun. I lived there for awhile, and it's definitely a second home. Have a stickjaw from Ellora's for me Better yet, send me a kilo or two! ha.

Nice to see the authorities waking up in time, for a change!

Mussoorie is indeed a beautiful hill-station and I do hope that the hordes of tourists expected there this season keep it that way.

Mussoorie has a Youth Hostel (YHAI)(Youth Hostels Assn of India) where the charges are reasonable compared to other Hotels in the town proper. Its on the banks of "the lake" (only one in Muss.) & the bus stop is 7 km before the main bus stop.

Every year YHAI conducts a trekking programme from 1st May to 10th June starting at Mussoorie YH. The trek starts at Sankri, a 12 hr bus ride arranged by the YHA at no extra cost. The trkking involves 11 to 12 days & reaches upto 13000 feet at Har-ki-doon.
The cost is a measly rs 2400 for 16 days. Tented acco & veg. food included along with the bus rides to & fro. You gotta be a member of the YHAI or the IYH (Intl Y H)...... or membership can be obtained at the site for a payment of rs 200. Two pp size photos reqd. Trekking cannot get any cheaper than this!!!

Thanks for the article.

Just so you know, photos submitted in the news section never show up right away since they land in an approval bin, just in case your wondering why it didn't appear right away.
