proposed demolition of Majnu ka Tilla

I just read that the tibetan community manju ka tilla in delhi (where a lot of tourists choose to stay) is to be demolished. No doubt it will still be a while before it goes ahead but i thought people on here might want to know:

Latest on MKTilla

Indeed, Majnu Ka Tilla is/was clean, quiet and affordable - therefore it could not, it seems, be allowed to stand. Here's the latest:

Times of India 22 July: New Delhi - Delhi's 'Little Tibet' is all set to go. Following HC's order, Delhi government is considering rehabilitation options for the Tibetan refugees staying here.

Stunned by the court's order to demolish the Tibetan settlement at Majnu Ka Tila, the political leadership is exploring possibilities of moving the Supreme Court.

full story here.

Any Rhyme or reason to this, illegal structures for instance or is the Delhi Municipal Council just taking back what is theirs??

Seems rather brutal anyway, surely they could find space for them somewhere!! Looks like even the Tibetins have got caught up in the real estate melee!!

Rhyme or reason .. the reasons given are beautification of the Yamuna river bed and , at the same time , widening of a highway .. try to to make sense of that.

Wideneing of the highway effects many people Vistet the Highways commission owns the land 50 meters either side of the tarmac!! Any encroachments can be knocked down.
Still I would have thought they would have some provision for these people who are being evicted!!

As for the Yamuna well it cartainly needs some tender loving care but I suggest there are better places to start!!

Agreed. How is knocking down a bunch of nice, new, well-maintained buildings in a thriving community like the Tibetan one going to help beautify the Yamuna? I would think that would begin with pollution, dumping and litter control, not displacing persons....

and dang, where am I going to stay in Delhi now?? I can get a great room there for 200Rs; even the Aurobindo Ashram charges 450Rs a night for "foreigners" (what would the Mother have said?)!

You'll just have to slum it with the rest of the backy packies SS, loads of hotels for that price on Paharganj, along with the accompanying touts, fortune tellers, collecters for the Bangladesh disaster and folks who don't look like they've been home since 68!!

Wow, that is upsetting. I was just there earlier this year. Seemed like a very nice area indeed.

As far as the Yamuna goes, when I was there I was told there is a major effort to rejuvinate it for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

There have been several efforts to rejuvenate the Yamuna, as quick as they clean it up people make a mess of it again!

Sorry Kidsan I am the master of typos didn't you know??? All sorted now!

Eviction postponed

A Phayul story talks of postponement until October 18th, compensations ... but now also says that the Ladakh Vihar also is affected.

So whatever happened with this proposed demolition? I would like to go to MKT when I'm in Delhi next month.

I stayed there a month ago, no hints of any problems, and we talked about my next stay in a month as well. Seems to be safely averted.
