Tremor felt in Kolkata !!!

In the 6th floor of my office, I felt chairs trembling, saw tube-lights with frame undulating....

We ran downstairs.... found collapsible-gates shaking....

Spent some time in ground floor...

Watched the news of 8.9 quake in Sumatra.... tremor felt in Kolkata as well as Banglore, Chennai too.

Tsumani warning issued...

Exclamation 8.7 quake; India issues Tsunami warning

Quote:
India issued a tsunami warning for Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the eastern coast on Wednesday after a 8.7 magnitude quake in Indonesia shook major cities, causing panic and sending people fleeing onto the streets.
Quote:
India's tsunami warning center said waves measuring up to 6 metres were expected along parts of its eastern coast, which was heavily hit by the 2004 tsunami. Smaller waves were expected to hit the remote Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Stay safe people. Stay away from coast till cleared by authorities.

The Indian alert system seems to indicate that their measurements indicate a wave was generated.

The Indian site seems to be down. I remember noting the projected wave amplitude as 3 mts at Indira Point, A&N Islands and 1.2 Mts for Chennai.

  • ...and thanks to a confusion regarding where the tsunami warning is for, half the team working in the Chennai office of my firm (and that would be several hundred people) have left for home ...
  • The port of Chennai has been closed.
  • Waves are expected to strike between 4:30-5 pm in Chennai as per some news sources and people have been asked to stay away from the beach.

The first waves reported close to the earthquake.

Stay safe everyone.

**********

MEASUREMENTS OR REPORTS OF TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY

GAUGE LOCATION LAT LON TIME AMPL PER
------------------- ----- ------ ----- --------------- -----
DART 23401 8.9N 88.5E 0956Z 0.03M / 0.1FT 06MIN
MEULABOH ID 4.1N 96.1E 0950Z 0.27M / 0.9FT 14MIN
SABANG ID 5.8N 95.3E 0956Z 0.31M / 1.0FT 08MIN

LAT - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY
ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL
MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY
ALREADY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG SOME COASTS.

BASED ON THESE DATA THE THREAT CONTINUES FOR ALL COASTAL AREAS OF
THE INDIAN OCEAN. FOR THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES HAVE
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME
OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN
LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO
BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE
TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE
VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST
BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
