Pooram the age-old festival is under threat
THRISSUR: The Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu Devaswoms have decided to hold a small-scale version of the Thrissur Pooram, with a minor `Ezhunnelippu' (ceremonial procession) featuring a single elephant, if the alleged crisis faced by the festival is not solved.

What exactly is the problem - just the noise-pollution rules? It isn't clear from the article.
You just can't have a Kerala temple utsav without lots of elephants, and panchvadya.

Considering its status as *the* Kerala temple festival, really it should be an exception.
Can someone explain to be the difference between panchvadya and chennamaddalam? (I think Chennamaddalam is just percussion?) |

Wiki has a fair explanation on Panchavadyam.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panchavadyam SS - Maddalam is a generic term for most drums. I am not too sure about chenna maddalam, but Nick is the resident expert.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhalam |

I think it's actually chenda maddalam. Chenda is the (main) Kerala temple drum, or so I thought. I guess CM is a group of chenda. ?

Chenda is the straight-sided drum which is hit with sticks. It is made by simply stretching the skins over the ends of the drum.
Maddalam is a double-ended drum, of much more complex, multi-layered structure, which is played with both hands. Try googling for kathakali, and you should get to see both these instruments.

"Ducking beforehand"
My knowledge of this festival is zero. But, for example (if there is a parallel at all), on Diwali, I am not unhappy to see restrictions on noise in some cities. I admit its because I am older; as a kid I contributed as much to the noise as anybody else, and so did my kids before they grew up a bit. But Bollywood music? That can't be traditional. |

Capt., better stay away from Trichur then
The noise is deafening. Glass windows of some buildings in the periphery are said to crack because of the vibrations.Sirensongs, I guess you are referring to Chenda Melam. Chenda melam --> an orchestra consisting primarily of chendas. check the link below. http://www.bl.uk/collections/sound-a...tmkerala4.html panchari melam, pandi melam etc are some types of chenda melams. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panchari_melam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandi_Melam The melams mentioned above do have some wind/reed instruments called kombu, kuzhal etc as well, apart from cymbals(elathalam). Chenda dominates the scene. bigger events will have dozens of chendas. Thayambaka is another chenda event, smaller in scale, and with only cymbals for support. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thayambaka Panchavadyam is completely different - it doesnt have chenda to start with. maddalam, thimila and edakka are the percussion instruments, accompanied by the cymbal ( elathalam ) and trumpet ( kombu ). Hope this helps... |
