Smile Now one can take his bride home in a tram

Kolkata : Weddings, engagements, birthday parties or even stag parties can now happen inside the trams- thanks to the Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC).

In order to fill its coffers, the cash-strapped state-owned corporation has decided to hire our tramcars for special occasions.

On 11th February, the CTC's heritage tramcar, Banalata, was hired to take the bride, the groom & the family members to the groom's residence after the wedding.

This was the second time after January, that the tramcar was hired and, on both the occasions, the CTC made more than five times the money it earns from a return trip.

Infact, enthused by the response the CTC has now decided to make this permanent business venture.

"The fact that trams are making heavy losses is no secret. We are thankful to petrons like Siddharth Kapoor, the groom who booked the tram on Tuesday, and others who are thinking of booking the tram. Thyey are giving a fillip to our sagging business," S K Salim chief operations manager of CTC told Times News Network.

He added that while the tram has so far been hired only to carry wedding guests, he is even prepared to hire it out as a mandap for weddings.

Presently, Calcutta Tramways Company charges Rs.10,000 for the special two and a half hour ride. "We earn between Rs1,500 and Rs2,000 per round trip from our trams," Salim said.

The tramcar has to be booked 10 days in advance. Banalata, is the obvoius choice because it is well maintained and has plush seats.

However, officail say that other regular tramcars can also be hired. "Clients can decorate the tram as they wish," Salim said.
