The Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee's (BKTC) plan to attract online donation seems to have failed. The Committee, a government body managing the renowned Hindu shrines of Badrinath and Kedarnath, launched its official website, www.BadriKedar.org, with online donation facility two years ago. This move was made to collect funds for preserving and protecting some of the ancient temples in the Garhwal Himalayas.
But the BKTC has received a lukewarm response to its internet venture. The committee is offering three online facilities - donation, Puja booking and 'Prasad' - since 2004.
In 2004-05, the BKTC got Rs 8517 via the internet. And, this year, it has got Rs 13,500, so far. The Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee introduced the online fund collection project to renovate 89 temples of religious significance located in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri and
Pauri districts, which are associated with the historic shrines.
Admitting failure, Anusuya Prasad Maikhuri, Chairman of the BKTC, told HT, "We failed to publicise the website in a big way. Secondly, we had to shift our Dehradun office. But we will do something to make online donation popular among devotees."
The devotees can make a minimum donation of Rs100. For introducing the online donation scheme the BKTC had joined hands with the ICICI Bank.
Though, annually, the Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee gets around Rs 6 crore through personal donations made to the shrines, yet, www.BadriKedar.org not getting enough donors indicates that a technical failure of the authorities to cash in on the brand equity of these two famous Hindu
shrines.
