News from Coorg
For those who have never been to this place, it is (was) one of the best spots in the Western Ghats to see a reasonably intact bamboo forest.
(from the Kodagu Front) Kaveri Nisargadhama closed for visitors Kushalnagar, June 11: The famous tourist spot of Kodagu, Cauvery Nisargadhama at Kushalnagar is closed to the visitors due to economic crisis in the forest department. The entry to the visitors has been barred from today. A locked gate and a sign board 'Cauvery Nisargadhama is closed due to unavoidable reasons' welcomed the visitors who rushed to Cauvery Nisargadhama today. According to forest department sources, the economic crisis has driven the forest officials to close the tourist spot. It is also said that the department has failed to grant salaries to 9 daily wage employees since 6 months. Even the wild animals in the sanctuary are left to starve due to lack of funds, the sources said. It is also said that the government has failed to release necessary funds for maintenance of Cauvery Nisargadhama, even though the Conservator of Forests, Mr. Anur Reddy had submitted a memorandum to the government to release funds, six months ago. The forest department sources have also disclosed that the Nisargadhama is achieving a profit of Rs. 22 lakh annually through tickets. But the profit directly goes to the State exchequer, which is not bothered to sanction money for the maintenance of the Sanctuary. In other words, somebody pocketed the cash.
