New name for Pondicherry
A new law has changed the name of Pondicherry. From now will be called Puducherry "new village". It was the original tamil name before it was changed by the french.

The BBC is behind the times.
I'm sure we did covered this story with an excerpt from the Indian press ages back! Or maybe it was only planned then... I edited your link to go straight to the story

... and the amount of money wasted with each name change... public places, pamphlets, stationary, road signs... over a trivial issue.
not to talk of the fact that half the people still call the city by the old name, years later. |

If my memory serves me correct then in November of this year Bangalore becomes Bengalaru, Mysore becomes Mysoru (sp) and Mangalore becomes Timbuctoo
I really can't see anybody bothering with the new name for Bangalore though being as it sounds similar but it does have the extra syllabel which obviously wastes time!

I have always wondered why they changed Calicut and Trivandrum to Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. I have found non-malayalees struggling to get the pronunciation right - why this torture?

In the Times this morning, Bangalore is indeed to become Bengaluru from November 1st. Unless of course there are any objections.
Oddly, they are suggesting extending the boundaries of the city as it already encroaches and encapsulates several villages. This would be known as Greater Bangalore, not Greater Bengaluru. Obviously I can see the logic here :-) |

This one gets my vote (not that it matters) for New Name Least Likely to Catch On. Poodlecherries? Everyone calls it "Pondy" anyway, are they going to now call it "Poodoo"? or even "Pudd-oo?"
