Nepal: The battle for the roof of the world

After weeks of demonstrations, violence is escalating in the troubled mountain kingdom as protesters - rejecting the King's offer of democracy - are shot down in the streets

Outside the national stadium, a mother ran between the armoured personnel carriers and machine guns of the army clutching her injured son, desperately searching for an ambulance.
The sound of gunfire rang out behind her. Two people sprinted through a soldiers' cordon carrying an unconscious young man with blood streaming from his head. This is Nepal. A country made famous by its place on the hippie trail and known for giving thousands of visiting trekkers a friendly welcome every year, is in chaos.
Violence spilled onto the streets of the capital Kathmandu again yesterday as more than 100,000 protesters...

Where will this end!! If the king goes I hope the seven parties are prepared to compromise for the good of Nepali's at large!!

However it will probably collapse into polarisation and horse trading when the king goes!!

So sad for what I believe was largely a peaceful population!!

When there is a smooth & planned transition things work out well. Now the situation has gone completely out of hand. There will be chaos & clashes soon of another nature. Real democracy is far away....

Let this be the last bloodbath in Nepal.
Let there be frangnance of democracy.
The cost of democracy is costing high but lets hope good old things roll back to the tiny paradise.

its a quagmire...the seven party alliance are a bunch of crooks! the maoists even worse. the maoists will run over the seven party alliance as thats weak and divided and too much infighting. the king is the only one who can take on the maoists but he is atrociously awful.....and if he goes..watch for nepal to slide to the maoists and jungle law.

the indian commies are supporting the maoists under the table and this will boomerang on them bad ~ wish i could zap both of them out of this planet.

the only way was let the king use the force on the maoists and then transition to a democracy~ which is what india wants IMHO....but the king is a basket case!!!!

meanwhile a million or more nepalis have walked into india onto cities, villages in the last year since gynanedra.

......yeah join the one billion party here!

The general perception in India is that the king has gone too far. Discontent in RNA about Indian arms embargo. Lakhs of people have already fled Nepal. Even government employees are not working refusing salary. Shortage of essential comodities... the influx of people in the border states like Bihar & UP has become alarming. We can not simply ignore the security threat in such a volatile situation. Bihar govt. has already already appealed to centre for adequate security forces. India has so far shown a lot of patience & excersised utmost restraint. But surely it is thus far. Considering the fast approaching situation China has distanced itself. If the situation continues this way India will have to intervene & it will be a massive intervention. Hope it doesn't take this turn.

Anybody knows is Western Union still active in Nepal? I worry of one friend in Kathmandu.

About Gyanendra.
Everyone has to pay for his deeds, in this life or afterlife.
Gyanendra was the main beneficiar of cold hearted murder of king Birendra and did not make enough sacrifices not in public eye not in religious sense. He could not absolve himself from allegations. This tarnished his image and jeopardised the future of monarchy in Nepal.

well~ it happens to many kings in the world...including king george across the atlantic. sometimes they are incompetent, sometimes they are just thrust into the stage suddenly, sometimes there are sounded by agenda-filled advisors who play their own games or become 'yes sir' people...~ they fall into a bubble and forget the real world! why it happens to hollywood celebrities for that matter or french politicians?~ mmmmmmmmm...it happens to some normal people as well

that is a very naive statement....how will china distance itself when it has it 'a' hand in all of india's neighbours including burma ~ and especially when it involves india~ we all play our games of geopolitics and its better to keep our competitors or former enemies occupied in small games or keep giving them pinpricks... duplicity is the name of the game and what is apparent in the media is not what is the reality on the ground. yeah support the king verbally while support the maoists...

the maoists cannot be allowed to take over period. will india with the present govt intervene though? ..the congress govt here has been inept so far...witness the faux pax mentioned in todays papers about the 7 parties today being furious that we 'endorsed' the king yesterday and today..our foreign secy belatedly was endorsing the 7 party stand~ ...whats going on?

india has to mediate...call the king and the 7 party alliance for talks...be the broker~ and ask the king to abdicate if there is a deadlock. they need to do this quick~

nepal is india..they dont need a passport to come to india and indians going there the same. nepalese can walk into india and millions do and will do (if not already)..we need to sort this out..there is no question about it...

......tring tring sonia~...

methinks the whole scene is close to end game, which will be good for all. Nepalis being (as far as I can tell from several visits) generally peaceloving, cooperative and respectful, they have a good chance of winding this regime change up sooner rather than later, and hopefully without the kind of reactionary dictatorship that so often ensues.

Congress Meddling

Congress (Indian) is meddling in Nepal follwoing its habits like the way it meddled in
Assam, Punjab, Kashmir, Sri Lanka. Indian Communists are providing aid to Maoists.

Some Points;
There is no popular protests for democracy in Nepal (it is the Maoists activists that are protesting)
There is no feeling in India that king has one to far. It is a feeling only shared/expressed by the leftist/trendy NYT wannbe media like Times of India.
Sadly BJP no longer expresses any views on domestic or foreign affairs. The only sensible views regarding the disaester it would if Maoists came to power in India
are expressed by Praveen Togadia of VHP, This guy should have been Indian PM

That's my feeling too. Ever the optimist, I'm hopeful that this will bring the changes it's people have needed for a VERY long time. It will never be the same country again, but maybe that's a good thing.

With all respect, the amount of people that turned out for the protests suggests otherwise.
