WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) - A needle-free vaccine protected more than 70 percent of visitors to Mexico and Guatemala from traveler's diarrhea, popularly known as Montezuma's Revenge, researchers reported on Wednesday. ...

The vaccine protects against Escherichia coli bacteria -- specifically a strain known as Enterotoxigenic E. coli or ETEC.

It is the leading cause of diarrhea in travelers to certain areas, causing four to five days of misery including nausea and cramps. ...

I had heard they were developing this, but didn't know they were that far along. Probably a couple more years before it comes out I'd guess.

The problem is what is the cost and waht is the benefit? When you look at the research results it only made a difference from 22 to 15%. I might go for it but infrequent travellers may not find it worthwhile..

Those are the figures for ALL types of diarrhoea, including mild types that are not caused by the potentially fatal E. Coli.

This study did show a marked difference to the numbers who suffered severe diarrhoea - and frankly that is the type that I would most like to avoid!

Quote:
Eleven percent of the travelers who got placebo had severe diarrhea, compared to 2 percent of those who got the patch.
For anyone who does not have a statistical bent, that means the people who did not get this vaccine were more than FIVE times more likely to suffer severe diarrhoea.
