Need for Metros in cities + fast trains

This is an interesting article by the "brains" behind the Delhi Metro system. Very well written, visionary and hopefully one that the government will act upon. His idea of having a separate government department for Metros (subways) is actually a good one.

I have been thinking a lot about ways that India can improve for the betterment of society. It is gratifying to see that some of my thoughts is shared by Professor Amartya Sen of Harvard University (and 1998 Nobel Prize winner in Economics):

I have felt that basic needs (clean drinking water, hygiene or rather waste disposal, electricity), infrastructure (roads, airports, fast trains, subways), built on public-private partnerships will go a long way on providing for its citizens. In addition, education and paying decent salaries to teachers and professors (compared to what folks are making in the IT businesses - I gather that the new pay commission is going to double the salary for professors) are also important.

Dr. Sreedharan was also the C & MD of Konkan Railway Corporation. Amazing person and very simple and unassuming.

I am proud to have met him a couple of times when he was at KRCL - Belapur.
