Nearly 200 die in Indian heatwave

From Reuters:
Nearly 200 people have died of sunstroke and dehydration in India as high temperatures sweep many parts of the country, government officials said on Sunday. Orissa was worst affected, with officials there confirming at least 75 deaths in the last six weeks. Unofficial reports put the toll at more than 300.

Andhra Pradesh was also reeling under a heatwave. Local government officials said more than 50 people had died in the state in the past month, while unofficial estimates put the toll at above 200.

About 70 people have died in scorching heat in Uttar Pradesh in the last two weeks, officials said.

Mercury levels remained above 46 degrees celsius across the state's vast Indo-Gangetic plain.

"This is one of the hottest summers in Uttar Pradesh over the past 100 years," R.K. Verma, meteorological director in Lucknow, the state capital, told Reuters.

Here in Puri they recorded 38 degrees three days back. The previous highest ever recorded temperature was 35 degrees.

BTW These temperatures are averages and really dependent on where they are measured. It may have been 38 degree by the sea, but in my house - located about 3 km away - it was without a doubt a few degrees hotter. Together with the humidity, I can only imagine what the heat index was.

I guess only Death Valley will come anywhere near the combined records of last week's heat wave. But then you don’t go to Death Valley without taking extra extra care, while you swet it out here like any other day. The idea to drive car in noon time hanging as close as possible to a/c vent, feeling cold air on your face while a trickle continue to run down your spine is a very queer experience of Indian summer.

Someone should send this report to President Bush, who is still in denial of global warming (or climate change as he likes to call it)

Yesterday (Monday) was the hottest day in Delhi this season. The mercury climbed to 45 C. Hopefully this agony will end soon. The only thing standing between me and Manali are the deadlines I must meet at work. Productivity has to be a direct function of good weather.

It's raining like crazy here in Japan. Where no one likes it, no one needs it.
All it does is to spoil one weekends outdoors plans.

Whereas in India 300 million will get to eat because of it. (Heat and economy aspects apart)

The Gods must really be crazy.
