Serial blasts rock Mumbai
NDTV Correspondent Tuesday, July 11, 2006: (Mumbai) At least five blasts have taken place on different railway stations in Mumbai. The first blast has been reported near Khar Railway station in Mumbai, which has left several people injured. The incident took place at 6:09 pm (IST) in a local train from Churchgate to Borivali between Khar and Mahim stations on the Western Line. According to reports coming in, there has been another blast at Mahim station, while the third blast took place at Bhayandar station near Mira Road. The fourth blast has been reported from Jogeshwari, while the fifth one took place at Matunga. In its wake, Delhi has also been put on high alert. The blasts took place first class coaches and took place during rush hour. Mumbai airport has also been put on alert. The police will be verifying the nature of blasts. The IB is also probing the link between the blasts at Srinagar and Mumbai. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be meeting Home Minister on the blasts in the two cities. more... At least six explosions rocked the railway network in India's financial capital, Mumbai, during the evening rush hour on Tuesday, officials from the state-run railway told the Press Trust of India. The blasts, which injured an unknown number of people, occurred at packed railway stations in the Matunga, Khar, Santacruz, Jogeshwari, Borivali and Bhayendar localities in and around Mumbai, the national news agency said. According to CNN, at least 20 people died in the blasts, and the country, including all airports, has been put on high alert. Television footage showed railway carriages split in half by the explosions. CNN said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Cabinet were in an emergency meeting on the blasts. Several people were injured in the blast on the train travelling from Mumbai's Khar suburb to Andheri in the city centre, an official said. "The fourth carriage is completely wrecked and we have seen between eight and 10 heavily injured people being brought out," said a witness, local shopkeeper Gopi Chand. "The blast was so powerful that we thought we were hit by lightning. It shook our market." The sprawling city, which is noted for its extensive underworld, has seen several bombings in the past. It was rocked in 1993 by a series of blasts which killed about 250 people and injured more than 1 000. On March 9, two separate blasts rocked the holy Hindu city of Varanasi, leaving more than a dozen killed and scores injured. Police have blamed Muslim underground figures or Kashmiri militants for most of the blasts. -- AFP, staff reporter |

Explosions Hit Train Stations in India
By RAMOLA TALWAR BADAM
The Associated Press Tuesday, July 11, 2006; 10:09 AM BOMBAY, India -- Seven explosions rocked Bombay's commuter rail network during Tuesday evening's rush hour. The blasts ripped apart train compartments and reportedly killed dozens, police and Indian media said. There was chaos throughout Bombay's crowded rail network following the explosions, and authorities struggled to determine how many people had been killed and injured. But Indian television reports indicated the death toll could be in the dozens. More... |

Blasts rock many Mumbai suburban Rly. stations
Mumbai, July. 11 (PTI): A series of blasts took place at Matunga, Khar, Santacruz, Jogeshwari, Borivali and Bhayendar suburban railway stations today. All the explosions took place in the first class compartments of trains at a time when a majority of Mumbaikars were returning home from office, railway control sources said. Eyewitnesses said a large number of people were seriously injured and all trains on the Western line route had been suspended. A PTI reporter at Santa Cruz station said a blast rocked Borivali-bound local at 1824 hours and seven to eight injured were taken to nearby hospitals. The explosion occurred in the first class compartment of the train and several passengers were jumped out of the speeding train in panic. Around 12 to 15 people injured at Santa Cruz station were taken to nearby V N Desai hospital and the entire first class bogey had been emptied. All local phones, including mobile services, in the city had jammed apparently due to congestion in the system as anxious people tried to reach their loved ones. Another 20 injured were admitted to the KEM hospital in Central area of Parel, hospital sources said. Police cordoned off all railway stations on the Western line and strict frisking and checking were carried out at the Central and Harbour sections of local trains services. Centre keeping close watch on Mumbai situation The Centre is in constant touch with Maharashtra Government in the wake of the serial blasts in suburban trains in Mumbai today and is closely monitoring the situation in the metropolis. "We are closely watching the situation and gathering all information from railways and authorities in Mumbai," a senior Home Ministry official said and reiterated the Government's determination to fight terrorism. Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil is in touch with Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. A series of blasts took place at Matunga, Khar, Santacruz, Jogeshwari, Borivali and Bhayendar suburban railway stations earlier today. |

15:17 11Jul2006 RTRS-UPDATE 2-Blasts hit trains in Mumbai, 15 reported dead MUMBAI, July 11 (Reuters) - Explosions hit at least five packed commuter trains during the rush hour on Tuesday in India's financial hub, Mumbai injuring scores of people, officials said. The local CNN-IBN news channel said at least 15 people were killed in one blast at Matunga station in central Mumbai. The Times Now channel said over 30 died in all the blasts. "The blasts happened when the trains were most crowded," D.K Shankaran, chief secretary of the state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital said. Mumbai Police Commissioner A.N. Roy told CNN-IBN there had been seven blasts on the rail network, on stations and on platforms. Officials said scores had been injured in the blasts, which also hit the suburbs of Mahim, Santa Cruz and Khar. "We have rescued at least 30 people in Mahim and about 40 to 50 in Matunga," A. Jhandwal, Mumbai's fire services chief told Reuters. "We have doused the flames at all the blast sites and now we are taking the injured to hospitals." One television channel showed more than half-a-dozen injured people at the Khar suburban station of Mumbai. One badly injured person lying near railway tracks was carried away by people using a long sheet of cloth. Indian Prime Minister immediately called the home minister and other top officials to an emergency meeting to discuss the violence. "It is a sad day," Home Secretary V.K.Duggal told reporters ahead of the meeting. "Security has been definitely put on high alert." Dazed survivors were shown with wounds from injuries to heads, legs and hands at the railway station, with little sign of any emergency medical aid. The Mumbai blasts came just hours after suspected Islamist militants killed seven people, six of them tourists, in a series of grenade attacks in Indian Kashmir's main city, Srinagar, police said, the most concerted targeting of civilians in months. Kashmir has been split between India and Pakistan since shortly after the two countries gained independence from Britain in 1947, but both claim it in full. Mumbai, a metropolis of about 17 million, has been hit by a series of bomb blasts in the past decade. More than 250 people died in a string of bomb explosions in Bombay in 1993 for which authorities blamed the city's underworld criminal gangs. Police in the Indian capital New Delhi said they were on the lookout for more violence. "We have mobilised our entire forces who are conducting checks in all areas such as buses, bus stops, train stations and religious institutions," Anil Shukla, deputy commissioner of police for South Delhi, told Reuters.
