Mobile phones in India

Hi,
I subscribe to 'Three' network in the UK. I want to be in touch with people in London when I travel in India.

To minimise costs,

1. Should I buy a new mobile phone and sim card in India? OR

2. Use my existing phone and just use my 3 account? OR

3. Unlock my mobile and use an Indian SIM ? OR

4. Do something else, e.g. buy a used mobile + SIM in India?

What would you do?

As minimising costs is your aim, unlock your mobile and buy an Indian SIM. You'll only be able to do that if you are staying in the same place for at least a week, due to security checks - in India you need photos and proof of ID to buy a SIM.

There is a useful sticky thread with all the details about this on the IndiaMike electronics forum.

If you did not topup or add a few rupees in June/July time frame, it has probably lapsed. Turn on the SIM and double check. Send an SMS to that number to see if you receive the SMS; then add some money online.
