Meditation is the cure, says Beatles' friend
Meditation is the cure, says Beatles' friend
Raju Gusain Rishikesh, December 11 Donovan Leitch is among the legendary folk singers of Britain. He is even considered Britain's answer to Bob Dylan. He shares a special bond with India as he was one of those who accompanied the Beatles on their visit to Rishikesh in 1968. Donovan (www.donovan.ie) has recently released his autobiography, 'The Hurdy Gurdy Man', published by St. Martin's Press (UK). Here are some excerpts of an online interview with him. Q: Does your autobiography, 'The Hurdy Gurdy Man', contain your memories of the 1968 visit to Rishikesh? A: Yes! The 1968 visit with the Beatles was the foremost influence on the western world that brought Eastern Yoga to the west in the 20th century. Q: What impact did the 1968 visit to this Himalayan town have in your life and music? A: It clarified my studies as a student of the Inner path. But it had little impact on my music. Q: Did the Rishikesh visit inspire the Beatles in their creative work? How? A: John learned styles from me and George wrote in a new way. Q: What do you think has been the impact of the Rishikesh visit on the life of the Fab Four? A: It was a break to re-assess what was happening to them. A time to go inside. Q: You were close to the Beatles? Did Rishikesh form part of your discussions? If, yes, what were the most discussed issues? A: Veggie food, not drinking, music and love. Q: Did you visit Rishikesh after 1968? A: No. Q: The Ashram where you and the Beatles stayed in 1968 is a deserted place now. A: I was sad to hear that it is a ruin of its former glory. Q: Anything you would like say on Yoga and meditation? A: The world suffers due to wrong thinking, wrong action and vague dreaming.Maharishi and his guru are right. Meditation is the cure! I actually am a Celtic-Buddhist. I was initiated by Maharishi for which I am eternally grateful. Hindustan Times New Delhi edition (Late city) December 12, 2005
