I'm moving this item to the News forum, as I believe it deserves front page exposure.

Might be a good idea to move it back here, or to the health forum later.

The general impression seems to be that Malaria is becoming less and less of a risk. It is worrying to hear about it being on the increase in a popular tourist destination.

I remember the same thing being reported last year (migrant workers were blamed), so an increase on last years figures is bad news.

To be fair though, migrant workers are blamed for everything in Goa. Personally I blame the mosquitos!

Vit-D deficiency and Malaria

I remember reading somewhere that now researchers are implicating vitamin-D deficiency to various illnesses since vitamin-D is required for the adequate synthesis of antibodies in tne body.
So, Indians get sick in late Monsoonal period as they get deficient in vitamin-D owing to low sun exposure in previous months.

So does anybody know if a vitamin-D supplement that can be taken?. That is easily available in India.

Sorry, you're quite right. Judging by the newspapers most Goans would gladly give up their prosperity to get their paradise back, free from drugs, crime, disease, Westerners, Russians, Biharis, Lamaanis etc.....

This sounds quite strange to me. Even in an European winter with its short days (in Germany with 8 hours daylight only, in GB/Scandinavia even less), they say an average of 10 min sunlight per day would be sufficient for your body to produce enough vitamin D... the lighter skincolour makes a difference (it absorbes the UV light better), but not so much.

I guess monsoon period is more stress on the immune system in general (more weather changes, more wind, getting wet etc.).

The consultant at my health clinic has told me that Goa is now most definitely considered a medium-risk area and no longer a low-risk area.

This malaria map shows the situation quite clearly (even if some of the geography is a bit suspect!)

The map shows Mumbai as low risk ..... but recent reports suggest it's increasing here as well?

Surely more mosquitos in the wet season is a bigger factor than Vit D deficiency?
