Glad to hear that it is "going home". I wonder what the provenance of the paper was and how it ended up at Christie's?

I am not sure if govt paid something..anyhow it would have not ben obscene as its starting price was 12000 pounds.

And we cannot say it belonged here, it was written by Gandhi and was in a form of letter, not remember who it was addressed to..

What surprises me is how come the letters went to some private party in the first place?

Those letters were written by somebody who himself was a NearGod at that time - and the Indian National Congress as well as the Indian Government had all the responsibilities towards him.

How did they allow these letters then to pass onto some private party - that also not his family members?

I guess they had sold those letters in a big price at that time !!! Or may be they didn't cared for him after indipendence, when the tough task had been done and they were enjoying the days of power and politics.

To put things in perspective, Gandhi is reportred to have written thousands of letters every month.

His grandson was on TV proclaiming this bit a few days ago.

In that case why are they making a mountain of a mole hill now for a few letters when they say these were not his last letters?!

and moreover such letters from other world leaders ..to be auctioned is not a rarity..they are very common thing...

Lest take an example if any leader worth his name today say for eg. APJ Adbul Kalam writes a letter to you..so do you think that his supporters or government would be after you to acquire that letter..you will keep the letter with you and maybe your next generations sell them to collectors...

According to the Reuters news article, it was a draft article written shortly before his assassination. There is no mention of letters. Which typically get sent away to others btw.

Oh, I haven't followed the news on it. Just that article in post #1 It mentions 19 days before he was shot yes. Looks like its contents were rather topical.

.. maybe not only the Indian media. See this BBC story

Gandhi letter to return to India

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6262288.stm

maybe theres a letter and an article? Don't really think so, this link seems to be talking of the same thing as the OP's link.

Hm yes. Matter of semantics maybe. Meanwhile, that BBC article goes on to describe it as "part of the Albin Schram Collection of Autograph Letters, which goes on auction at Christies on Tuesday. It includes 570 lots of handwritten manuscripts by some of the most notable figures of European history in the last 800 years."

So I guess someone's been doing his/her collecting
