Mahamasthakabhisheka begins in Karnataka

The millennium's first Mahamastakabisheka, the head anointing ceremony of Lord Bahubali, a revered Jain icon, began Wednesday amidst prayers and monks taking part in bathing the world's tallest free standing statue with a steady stream of holy water and milk.

The day-long ceremony started with the designated Jain monks, led by Charukeerthi Bhattarka, carrying the holy water of Agrodaka from the Digambar Jain mutt to the venue on Vindyagiri Hills. Chanting hymns, the pontiff filled a giant pot with rice and sealed it with a silver coconut, signalling the commencement of the spectacular event.

Bahuballi Maharaj ki Jai!

its been time since i ever talked and thot about this religion i belong to... tho this is not taken as a religion... i have been putting Jain..in the school forms and all.. and sometimes even Hindu-Jain which i think is compltely absurd on my part because Jain and Hindu are not the same nor connected anyways. Jain as Buddhism is a different ideology. different from Hindus.

over years i have been reciting the Namokar Mantra without ever thinkiing of its meaning and correct pronunciation. but one fine day i actually ferreted out the meaning i was glad that it has such an universial meaning.. its no way bound to Jains only .. its not jain specific. so since then started repeating the same verses wherever i go... be it the Masjid, Gurudwara or Church... becuase this is UNIVERSAL and covers all...

here is a short description of the Namokar Mantra

-------------------------
Namo arihantaanam
Namo siddhaanam
Namo aayariyaanam
Namo uvajjhaayaanam
Namo loe savvasaahunam

Eso pancha Namokaaro
Savva paavapanaasano
Mangalaanam cha savvesim
Padhamam havaii mangalam

Most of the Jain texts have the following translation:

I bow to the Arihantas, the perfected human beings.
I bow to the Siddhas, liberated bodiless souls.
I bow to the Acharyas, the masters and heads of congregations.
I bow to the Upadhyayas, the spiritual teachers.
I bow to the spiritual practitioners in the universe, Sadhus.

This fivefold obeisance mantra,
Destroys all sins and obstacles,
And of all auspicious repetitions,
Is the first and foremost.
----------------------------------

The statue is a free-standing monolith (i.e. stone - in this case Deccan granite) and it has been there for over a thousand years. The surrounding Jaina centre is much older than that; for example there is a complex on the opposite hill containing the cave where Chandragupta Maurya retired from killing people to become a monk.

Hi ... I've visited a few years back and it is a most serene place and the statue is fantastic. There is a whole bunch of stairs leading up to the top of the hill where this statue is located with fantastic views from around there.
