But the price they're charging for that sector is much higher than Air Deccan's fare (and no, I'm not a shill for Air Deccan, I simply like their low fares).

Kingfisher Air is not going to compete with Air Deccan but with Indian Airlines and Jet airways. They are targeting the middle-premium sector of the market. Air Deccan is not a reliable airline in any way(too many cancellations) and their baggage allowance of 15kg is the lowest among all the airlines.

That's what I thought too GC and was surprised the article title referred to Kingfisher as a 'budget' airline. Mr Mallya referred to his new airline as a 'value' airline earlier in the year and planned to compete with the big guys on service rather than price; perhaps more beer and peanuts!

Do all the local airlines have such a huge difference between fares for residents and fares for foreigners? I just checked out a fare on kingfisher and the foreigners fare was more than double......

Air Deccan is the only airline which charges the same fare to residents and foreigners as well.

Even with beer-fueled planes, you better have more destinations than their site currently shows if you're going to stay in business.

Has anyone travelled with Kingfisher yet?

It would be interesting to know what the experience was like.

I have just booked online with Kingfisher...

I have just booked online with Kingfisher, and the booking system is amazingly good!

I am travelling from Mumbai to Bangalore and back, and it was easy to select the flights and pay online.

There is a different price for foreigners, so I paid US $210 return, which isn’t too bad.

Once you have paid, you have the option to select your seat, and print out an e-ticket and itinerary.

The whole process took no more than five minutes, and I received confirmation by email, along with a copy of the bar-coded e-ticket I had already printed.

The e-ticket also has a freecall telephone number, a standard telephone number and an email address for customer services.

I hope the flights are as good as the booking system…

My first flight on Kingfisher Airlines

The Kingfisher flight from Mumbai to Bangalore was faultless.

The plane was new, clean and on time.

The check-in staff were friendly, efficient and cheerful.

The cabin crew were equally helpful, friendly and efficient.

The food was good and so was the service.

There is only one passenger class - "Kingfisher Class" and the seats are comfy and the legroom isn't bad either.

All passengers were given a freebee - a mobile phone/glasses case containing a pen, earphones, towel, etc.

The flight from Bangalore back to Mumbai didn't happen.

I checked in at the airport at 7:00pm for an 8:40 flight only to be told that the flight had left at 6:00pm.

Kingfisher said that I should have been informed of the change, but I hadn't heard from them.

I was offered a full refund or a credit note for any other Kingfisher flight.

My reaction was to suggest it would be more appropriate if Kingfisher bought a ticket for me with a different airline - I had a connecting flight in Mumbai that I couldn't afford to miss!

Kingfisher agreed, and bought a ticket for me on Jet Airways that got me into Mumbai in good time. I had no reason to complain - indeed, I could only praise Kingfisher for the way in which they handled the situation.

The flight had been rescheduled due to the monsoon's effects on Mumbai airport. Kingfisher should have told me of the change - they had my email address, my mobile phone number and my office numbers in India and the UK...

I shall definately travel with Kingfisher again.

P.S. You can't get a beer on Kingfisher Airways - Indian law prohibits the serving of alcohol on all internal flights!

KF Airlines is definitely higher priced than Air Deccan and cant be really called a budget airline, though its fare is cheaper than Indian Airlines and Air India.

Spicejet is another relatively new budget airline that is the real competition for Air Deccan. However, in terms of service and comfort, I think it outdoes Air Deccan already. Air Deccan reigns supreme simply because of its dirt cheap fares, SPECIALLY if you book REAL early. Apart from that, i have heard that the Airbus aircraft it flies is really an AIR-BUS

I havent tested any of these so far, but will be doing so on 10th September 2005, when i fly Delhi-Bangalore. I got this ticket CHEAP when I booked a month and a half earlier, cost me Rs. 2400 including taxes. And that, is what I would call a ROCK BOTTOM fare for this sector

Watch this space for my Air Deccan review

Meanwhile, this site www.mouthshut.com is an excellent resource for reviews about literally ANYthing, including budget airlines. Try it out, its a great great help
