Kashmir to have trains in 6 months

In the near future, Kashmir will no longer remain cut off from the rest of the country even during the severest winters, thanks to a path-breaking railway line.

In the Valley, the 120-km-long rail line between Qazigund and Baramulla is almost complete and trial runs will begin soon. By December-end, specially designed trains will be chugging in the valley on a broad gauge line.

Srinagar, Badgam, Kakapore and Pampore stations are ready with beautiful wooden carvings done by local artisans. The architecture of the station buildings blends with that in other parts of the Valley.

The Valley train has a specially designed 1,400-horse power engine and an auxiliary engine that will generate heat to keep the engine and its lubricants from freezing. It will also pump hot air into the coaches to keep passengers warm.

Full Times Of India article.

Note. when this section opens it will not be linked to Jammu (via Udhampur), The Udhampur-Qazigund section will take longer to complete, I think it is expected to open sometime next year.

Trail running of trains are going on in the Quazigund-Srinagar section in the Kashmir Valley. Now there will be local train in between the valley...no need for booking when they start.

Later, then the line will be connected to the main line from Jammu-Udhampur-Katra, then long-distance express trains will move into Kashmir from various parts of India. You need booking then. They say, will take about a year to complete .....remember, the line runs through trecherous mountainous terrain and river gorges...and is equally challenging like China's famed Tibet Railway.

But one thing is for sure.....it will deliver spectacular scenery.

Kashmir to have world’s tallest bridge

Statesman News Service
REASI, Nov. 5: Surpassing the record of the Millau Road Bridge in France, a bridge being constructed on the Chenab in the small hamlet of Kauri in Reasi district of Jammu, is all set to become the world’s tallest bridge.
A joint venture of Indian-European partnership and the flagship project of the Konkan Railways, this Chenab Bridge will soon be designated as the world’s tallest bridge, located at the height of 359 metres above the bed of the mighty and tumultuous Chenab.
With this, Kauri will also emerge as an attraction centre in the country. Few would have even heard of this small and virtually inaccessible hamlet in newly created district of Reasi where the bridge will be built.
