Kashmir peaks reopen to foreigners
Indian government officials say they have lifted a ban on foreign climbers visiting certain mountain peaks in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The peaks were closed to foreigners three years ago when there was a military conflict between Pakistan-backed forces and the Indian army in the Kargil region. Kashmir Tourism Minister Mohammed Ashraf said the Indian Mountaineering Foundation had been authorised by the Indian Ministry of Defence to open the mountain range to tourists. The Kargil region has many famous mountains, including the twin peaks of Nun and Kun, both more than 7,000 metres high, as well as the Pinnacle and White Needle. |
