| Srinagar, March 21 Anti-US demonstration in the city today turned violent as protestors pelted stones at private and police vehicles in the vicinity of Lal Chowk and shopkeepers downed shutters fearing violence. Police had to fire teargas shells to control the crowds. Small groups of protestors gathered at Miasuma, Gowkadal and other adjacent areas around busy Lal Chowk shouting anti-US slogans and expressing solidarity with the people of Iraq, official sources said. As the police tried to disperse the protestors, they started pelting stones at them and their vehicles. Official sources said no arrests had been made so far and there were no reports of any casualties on either side. But shopkeepers in the area spontaneously closed their shutters fearing an escalation of violence and deterioration in the situation, they said. More protest rallies were expected in the afternoon after the Friday prayers, the sources said, adding police and paramilitary forces had been put on an alert to deal with any situation.
