Info for the April-May India tourists

The national elections are to be held in four phases across the country on

April 20
April 26
May 5
May 10.
The results will be announced on May 13.

Generally they are not violent or anything. There could be some odd hotspots. Election activities may not have any direct impact on tourists.
Avoid any critical journeys (like to the airport or to catch a long distance train) on the election & result days. There can be minor roadblocks or inconveniences the campaigning days.
But be aware of the hectic campaigns and the huge rallies at city centers and towns etc. The public noise level go us even though there are code of conduct in place for sound level etc. Road can get blocked for hours if there is a rally or the like. Trains typically are not affected.

Just watch the local newspaper for the happenings during these days.

See the detailed schedule geographically here at the Election Commission of India site.www.eci.gov.in/ElectionMaps/Schedule/web2004.jpg

Talking Its a great tourist attraction !!!

The campaigning in India, is just something you will not see in most of the democratic world. Especially in north india, if you get a chance to see a candidate moving around requesting for vote, remember to stay back and enjoy the spectacle.

Would like to reemphasise on the additional cushion time you have to keep on any travel in this period. Between cities and even within city/town the travel time can get fairly stretched.
