India to Clip the Wings of Internet

Quote:
India tried it once about six months back but was forced to pull back due to strong protests. Now however, the country's Department of Telecom (DoT), the authority that controls telecommunications, is working on a smart way out of censoring the Internet without attracting a public outcry. And if the DoT can have its way, India may put a stop to Internet telephony services of Yahoo, MSN and Skype among a host of others that are mushrooming in the country.

Govt will be fool to do that, there will be strong protest and anti lobbying from the IT sectors.. They will not be able to do so ..

I've spent years (seemingly) waiting for clearances/approvals from those Dinosores (DoT)..... best to nip their aspirations in the bud before it gets written in red-taped stone.

This is the old telephone companies fighting with the new IT companies. The internet is a serious threat to the telephone business. I don't see it getting very far.

The article indicates two aspects of blocking: <1> Blocking URLs of sites that the gov considers inappropriate. <2> Blocking Internet Telephone service providers not authorized with DoT.

About first one: if they try it ISP level or whatever, not much possible to implement. With many tools like Anonymous browsers/browsing sites available, high-tech countries including US failed at that. Anybody having related experience in Middle-East (where the govs try this at ISP level) will confirm these tools are good enough.

The second point needs a little more attention I guess. By Internet Telephony, does the gov indicates only VOIP enabled Telephone sets, or the PC-to-PC calls also being considered?

If they talk about VOIP phones so popular with corporates, DoT has a valid point and to me the ban seems implementable. If they talk about PC-to-PC calls that all messangers provide today with increasingly good quality, again DoT will fail the same way as point one.

Porn

Just wondering if anyone has thoughts about how pornagraphic websites are effecting the young men of India. I know here in the ol USA we are far gone, but it seems there is more sexual innocense in India which the Internet is quickly obliterating, but maybe not.

Sorry about the censorship... If it hadn't been a front-page news-item post...

I'm afraid there is some way to go yet before Telecoms and the internet break out of the dark ages of government control.

And it seems to suit the providers just fine --- nobody, for instance, seems interested in moving "broadband" (fraudband, as many of us call it) forward to match the kind of speeds that many countries offer. Apparently, even out tiny neighbour Sri Lanka is way ahead of us on bandwidth/cost. Government defines 'broadband' as speeds above 256K --- Ha-bloody-hah (or should I say ha-*****-hah ?).

On a serious note I remember there were people who lost access to blogs and even the TT for a short time when this was first tried!
