What an anxiety filled night for us. My daughter studying in Hyderabad had gone to the city for her week end bash. Cell phone networks were completely jammed. Could get thru only around midnight after she had safely reached her campus.
Thanks Amyth... she had gone to Gufa after hearing about your recommendation. If not she would have been elsewhere. |

Why do Indian "terror blasts" always sound so "anonymous" in the news?
I continue to find it intriguing that news reports from India so rarely mention who is behind the attacks or why. Only in the blog commentaries does anyone dare to whisper a bad word about __________. It would seem to me that India will have a hard time conducting a counter-terrorism program, with the bulk of the populace behind such a program, until Indian news reports are able to mention openly what is going on. [Hint: the so-called "Western" news media occasionally dares mention that ________ is operating in India.]
Consider the opening sentence from this 06-AUG-07 article in the Hindustan Times [with "offending" words removed]: "India on Monday sought to play down the latest ________ threat warning that diplomatic missions in India are the terror network's new targets." That's right, India has no need for concern, as that terrorist group only wants to blow up non-Indian things. Uh huh. |

70's, many reasons why this sometimes happens.
-Fear of communal riots. Hence, also, references to Hindus and Muslims are cloaked in transparent doublespeak in the media, when quoting official sources. -a desire for some to not name groups while an 'investigation' is underway -the canard, still being believed by a few specially abroad, that Pakistan, either directly or indirectly, is not involved in almost all terrorist activity. In India, a hasty naming of Pakistan has its critics.. how did they know so soon? The fact is that in the present scenario worldwide, if there are serial blasts, the chances are more than good that the usual suspects will be involved. It must be said, however, that the 'official' or the media line is not believed by many. The TV media does name suspect organisations, including in this case.. and sometimes suspiciously quickly. But I can't think of a single major serial bombing where the usual suspects were not involved.

Blasts in Hyderabad
Why do people do this to each other? Don't we ever learn from mistakes made???? The pictures were horrifying and appalling. Our sympathies and prayers to those who live there and to those who have families and friends in Hyderabad.

Knowing who is behind a terrorist attack does little if anything to lessen the horror or comfort survivors. Or even to prevent future bloodshed if "the American Experience" and response to terror are any guide.

"Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism -- how passionately I hate them!" "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe." The People Who Hate have claimed more lives and have instilled more fear. What a shameful little victory.
Young people will return to the cinemas and the concert halls. They will enjoy a snack with their friends. Nothing was gained. But, maybe, a little more hate was created. Sad. |

i, for one, am glad i was able to see those awful photos, which put a human face squarely on this tragedy. let's see...2 such attacks in 2006, the may 2007 mosque bombing, and now this. and yet the story appears only on the fourth "international" page of today's new york times. had this happened in a european city, it would be front page news. maybe if more people had the "benefit" of such sad photos, they would see what they don't now seem to know: that indian blood, too, is red.
