India's obviously playing to the strengths..reaping it rich in shooting..sadly they changed the weightlifting rules hence the number of medals available in the sport have reduced.
Since shooting events are coming to an end..the next hope would be boxing where number of Indians have made it to the semis..lets hope we getsome golds there. Else, I expect india to end up fourth..Canada will catch up.. |

Wow some people take the commonwealth games seriously. Some athletes from the UK dodged the games to take part in the world indoors (thats how highly they rate the commonwealth games).
They are rather poor games packed with below average athletes who are not capable of doing much on the world stage with very few exceptions like a few of the Kenyan runners (then again they have not won much at any of the majors over the last few years) and Asafa Powell. Looking at the Indian team, besides a few of the Indian shooters I doubt they would stand much of a chance of winning a medal at the worlds or olympics. |

Erm shere have you had a bad day
The commonwealth games may not be the world or olympic games but to say this is a second rate games is a bit unfair Paula Radcliffe Ian Thorpe Kelly Holmes are just some of the not so old athlets who have graced the commonwealth games Just today in the 400 meters a British girl won beating both the world and olympic championship! Jamaican world-record holder Asafa Powell is there in the 100 meters People like Steve Cram and Daley Thompson won gold and went on to greater things as did Steve Ovett and Jonathan Edwards. Alan wells took the gold fro scotland in the coomonwealth games and went on to take on the world, Lindford Christie did likewise There are olympic and world champions taking part in the cycling and shooting................ Sorry for the British take on things I'm sure there are many many other commonwealth games winners who stormed the world!! |

No not having a bad day.
I honestly think the Commonwealth games are mostly for second rate athletes who do not stand a real chance of doing anything at the worlds or Olympics. I said said in my original post there are a few exceptions and named the likes of Asafa Powell (then again he has not really performed in major championships). By and large the majority of the competitors are sub standard when it comes to world level. The vast majority of those competing would struggle at European level let alone world level, they would struggle to get the qualifying standards the British athletes have to reach to get a team place. Alan Wells went on to take the world ? He won the 100m race at the 1980 Olympics because of the US boycott. Look at those who made the final Silvio Leonard, Marian Woronin , Aleksandr Aksinin etc etc. Not exactly a world class field. To prove my point lets see what these Commonwealth champions do at the World Championships in Osaka next year. Lets see how many medals the British team walk away with. Lets look at the last Commonwealth games (Manchester) Gold, Silver, Bronze, Total medals 1. Australia 82 62 62 206 2. England 54 51 60 165 3. Canada 31 41 42 114 4. India 30 22 17 69 5. New Zealand 11 13 21 45 2004 Olympics Gold, Silver, Bronze, Total medals 1 United States 35 39 29 103 2 China 32 17 14 63 3 Russia 27 27 38 92 4 Australia 17 16 16 49 5 Japan 16 9 12 37 2005 World athletic championships Gold, Silver, Bronze, Total medals 1 UNITED STATES 14 8 3 25 2 RUSSIA 7 8 5 20 3 ETHIOPIA 3 4 2 9 4 CUBA 2 4 0 6 The likes of GB, Canada, India and NZ do not even get close to getting into the top 5. |

Still lot's of world and olympic champion athletes do take part in the games and for the second raters it's perhaps their only chance to compete on this kind of stage.
I notice in one of your lists that Australia actually made number 5 on the medals table. As for Alan Wells I see what you mean though you can only beat whats on the track with you!! I never liked him much any way after he criticised our snooker at the miners club, funnily enough I was playing Steven Hendry at the time so he got that wrong!!! |
