Hundreds killed in Kashmir quake

Pakistan says more than 1,000 people may have died in a powerful quake that also hit north India and Afghanistan.

The quake in Kashmir had a magnitude of at least 7.6. The epicentre was 80km (50 miles) north-east of Islamabad.

Pakistan's interior ministry said several villages had been wiped out. A total of 172 are so far confirmed dead in Indian-administered Kashmir. Rescuers are trying to reach dozens of residents feared trapped in a building collapse in Islamabad

How are our IM'ers ?

Wasn't there some IM'ers in the Kashmir area? And does any know if they are OK?? This earthquake sounds just horrible. They are in my thoughts and prayers. If any one knows something could you post.
Thanks

Hi Larki, I'm in Gilgit now, and we got a good shake this morning for about 2 minutes, with aftershocks all afternoon. Luckily, we escaped the worst, no major damage here, sadly the same can't be said elsewhere.

I was in Kashmir last fornight. Sounds sad.. I hope the damage is contained.. this year has been particularly tough on the people living in the mountains.. first the floods in Himachal.. now the quakes... *sigh*

Dr. F. left last week.

My beloved and his family live in Srinigar, but i've not been able to get in touch with anyone. the people of kashmir have suffered so much; it breaks my heart.

i was able to get through and talk with my fiance's brother who assured me that they were all alright. My guy was traveling by car to jammu to take the train to goa. the road he was on was closed down for a few hours due to the quake but it sounds like he made it to the train station and left the area - whew!

here is a link about the fault lines in that area:

Hundreds killed in Kashmir quake

I was talking with my fiancee at the time the quake hit. First he seemed ok and then I could hear the nerves hitting his voice and then -- of course! -- he left the building. I don't think I have ever been so relieved to have someone get off the phone in my entire life.

I cannot imagine what devastation there is nearer to the epicentre. Lotus, I am sooo glad your loved ones are ok. That's wonderful news.

I remember how scary the Northridge earthquake was when I had first moved to California and I am in an area well-prepared for such events. I have no doubt that some of these places (many of them?) are not equipped to handle such severe temblors. My heart, prayers and sympthy/empathy go out to the people in the affected areas.
