Gujjar agitation in North India

There were riots a year ago, also during the last few days.

Disruptions in Delhi and NCR, and fears of more

Quote:
Sources said that since the Gujjar unrest was fast reaching the NCR, which has already witnessed sporadic protests, the security establishment did not want to leave anything to chance on Thursday.

The Gujjar community has threatened to block traffic in different parts of the Capital in support of their demand for ST status. Presence of a number of Gujjar pockets in the outskirt areas has become a matter of concern in the Home Ministry, they said.

The Home Minister has also issued advisories to the authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, besides Delhi, in the view of the stir in Rajasthan.

Rajasthan
is the worst affected state so far, with some 26 trains cancelled and road travel affected.

Infact one of clients has a plant in Bhiwadi, and they were closed for last 4 days. They have opened today, as workers came in early in the morning.

My contact their tells me that there is heavy police deployment, and theings look under control as of now.

My favourite subject: The Bimaru states is tinder waiting to be lit.

(umm, for some members- Bimar means sick in Hindi.
BIMARU States often refers to Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh- even economists and political commentators use this term)

NEW DELHI (AFP) - An ethnic group threatened Thursday to bring India's capital to a halt, blocking key highways and paralysing trains in a bitter and deadly campaign for more government aid, police and reports said.

Thousands of Gujjars squatted on roads into New Delhi at the start of a day-long shutdown, a police spokesman said.

Dear Friends.

Rajasthan is not a Bimaru state. It is a very nice and peaceful state.Gujjar agitation is only due to politics nothing else. We all know that kota district of Rajasthan is famous for its leading Coaching and success rate of kota is very high. Birla, L.N.Mittal etc are also from Rajasthan.

Its a part of journey.

It would seem that, by definition, it is, else I guess it would have to Bimau, or something.

That's no comfort to those who are affected

I'm living in Delhi, and today's threatened shutdown of the city was really a non-event. Many factories/offices closed in anticipation of huge riots and people went home early ...but the throngs of thousands of protesters expected did not materialize...net result its been an oddly quiet Thursday in and around most parts of Delhi.

A story like this....

guardian.co.uk, UK - 2 hours ago
A blockade by thousands of protesters from India's Gujjar tribe brought Delhi to a standstill today, paralysing trains by squatting on tracks and setting up ...

Is just a good example of crappy sensationalist british journalism.

If you're going to Jaipur, or from Jaipur to Agra, check it all out with someone there, but from here it's not at all debilitating. Last year, when the same protests happened buses ran to Agra from Delhi, they were just really slow b/c the compromise somehow agreed on was protesters would occupy one side of the highway, and traffic the other.

The roads of Delhi and NOIDA today were so empty of traffic that it was a pleasure to drive, one realized that Delhi has pretty decent road system. And did not see any Gujjars either. My manager was saying that in the morning they were sitting in the middle of a traffic junction, but then when the journalists come to photograph them rioting, how can they be caught sitting on the sidewalks.
But it was peaceful

How to know if trains are cancelled.

Hi,

I'm flying in from the US, arriving June 11 in Delhi and supposed to take a train to Kanpur June 12. Does anyone know how to check if a train is cancelled from abroad?

Yep, pretty much. I drove to CP and other areas in South Delhi for some personal work and did not see one cop. Traffic was as heavy as on a normal day esp in the CP area. Other than violence at one place, Arya Nagar, everything was peaceful.

go to the website of Indian railways and check it out. You will need the train number which you can get from the site itself if you have the train name and patience. Their site is not the best designed so have patience. It does work though.
