Government may grant visa on arrival to tourists from 18 nations

I guess the operative words are 'may' and 'could'

Quote:
India may grant visa on arrival in the near future to tourists from 18 countries which have recently been given the facility of five-year multiple entry visa.
Quote:
"We have been able to persuade the Home Ministry to give long-term visas. It is on a trial basis, for 18 countries. I hope visa on arrival could start for those countries," she said.

The Economic Times article

Interesting news. Interesting article for that matter, also on possible other tourism industry incentives.

Quote:
To begin with, visa on arrival could be given to tourists from the 18 countries to whose citizens India has started giving five-year multiple entry visas
Does anyone know what are the 18 countries referred to?

What people forget is the fact that Indian visas are a modern requirement for many countries. In the good old days citizens of commonwealth countries didn't need a visa to enter India. As a Canadian all of my India trips during the seventies were without a visa. Visas were needed back then for Afghanistan and Nepal, but not India.

Sure would be nice to turn the calendar back, but I suspect there are now too many bureaucrats getting paid by the fees charged... ;-)

Reciprocity. Countries now react according to who does what to whom*.

*Err, there is a damn good limerick on doing what to whom, but not posting it since I may have to ban myself

LOL. It may also pay to remember that no few of us were never in the Commonwealth to begin with. So whatever may have been in place did not affect all that many of us. I believe a majority of visitors to India are from places that would never have fallen under this (Africa, SE Asia, Mid-East, and so on. And no, I said non-Commonwealth even in those regions.)

Finnish citizens can apply for a 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa but the tourist visa - all the tourist visas that Finnish citizens can apply for (to visit India) - come with the "90 days from arrival and you have to be out" rule, unless the visa rules have changed again... (trying to stay on top of them) *sigh*

This has been doing the rounds for a few years now.

Believe it when I see it.

Not exactly nuclear fusion at room temperature so why all the talk but no real action for all these years ?

I'd like to know which countries - as you said Shere, they have been saying this for years. The 48 hours Visa turnaround is interesting though - wonder if this will become the case. Also, tourist protection police in plain clothes - mmm, I think this is wide open for touts impersonating them!!

Aren't there 18 countries that now have the 5-year-but-only-90-day-stay visa?

I expect it'll be the same. I only remember it doesn't include UK.

This is getting like [is it the] Upanishads!

How did the Universe begin?

Only God knows that. And maybe even he doesn't know.

Which are the 18 countries? Maybe they know. Then again...
