| "Glimmer" of hope for India's dying vultures Scientists are reporting a first glimmer of hope in their battle against a mystery disease that has decimated India's griffon vultures. Two birds afflicted by the deadly disease appear to have been nursed back to health by researchers at a new laboratory. (From New Scientist online.) Read the full story. | When you first posted about the problem, it dawned on me that I haven't seen any turkey vultures around here for a few years either, but after checking the Audbon guide, found it is not closely related and probably just a coincidence. Hope it's not too late for the griffon. The birds 'falling out of the skies' here in North America are crows and it is a very serious problem because they are dying from contact with the west nile virus -- and passing it on to humans via the mosquito. West nile has spread from the southeastern US to central Canada and we are now awaiting it's arrival in the west this summer. It's killed a lot more people than SARS, and it will be around for a quite a while -- you'll probably see it in Europe eventuallty. |
