Terrible story. That such events still can happen... Consequence of ticketless travel?

Inspector general of police (Railways) V Kamaraja told HT over phone on Thursday that Manoj had admitted to beating Wilfred mercilessly. Kamaraja however declined to furnish details as to what provoked the TTE to thrash Wilfred ruthlessly.

I'd like to hear the other side of the story. What that heck would provoke that kind of physical response? Was the TTE being threatened or was the French citizen threatening another passenger? Very out of character for anything that I've ever observed within the Indian transportation systems. Gotta be a bit more information here .....

Two conflicting reports

You may be onto something, Peak.

May 8th
Quote:
The TTE has alleged that Wilfred, who was not carrying any train ticket, was attacked after the French national kicked him and a pregnant woman.

"During the scuffle, the French national kicked Manoj and a woman co-passenger. This provoked other fellow passengers, who, along with the TTE and vendors of the pantry car, attacked Wilfred and inflicted grievous injuries," said the officials.

May 20th
Quote:
Investigations into the incident of assault on French national Frank Wilfred on board the Amritsar-bound Sachkand Express has almost come to a standstill as the railway police have not been able to dig out the exact motive behind the attack on the foreigner, who lost his life after being thrashed by travel ticket examiner Manoj Kumar and some other people.

Meanwhile, a local court extended the judicial custody of TTE Manoj Kumar for another 14 days on Saturday. Manoj was made to appear before the court from the Karnal jail through video-conferencing.

Assault.
Robbery.
Murder.
Attempt to dispose of the body without ID.
Crude attempt at escape.
Make up story about evil foreigner.

Interesting end to the Hindustan Times piece, where they SMSed the French Embassy but got no reply on the matter. Nice bit of journalism, that.
I brake for Maddur vadas.

I am not surprise.

There were also other instances in the past where a ticketless person in a bus was kicked out by the ticket collector, while the bus is moving.

A foreigner.......

In the last 5 years I've personally read about 20 newspaper reports about locals being pushed from a moving train, they all died, would it be fair to assume that the figure is perhaps 5-10 times higher, considering that I don't get to read the paper every day, and that many cases won't make the national papers.

Wasn't there a politicians son thrown off a moving train just north of Delhi a couple of years ago (or was the son accused of throwing someone off the train?).

Becomes big news when it happens to a foreigner.

Shouldn't happen to anyone, and even if this guy was being a real jerk, it's his family who'll feel the pain.

I know of an instance where a ticketless traveller pushed the ticket collector into the toilet and ran off.

Ticket collector beating a passenger is an extreme case. I definitely see a provocation in this case without which its hard to imagine a TC thrashing a passenger, that too a foreign national. Saw a few incidents of hawkers in the train bullied by TC. Saw a similar incident in a train where a couple of spanish tourists got in to a heated argument with other passengers when me and my friend intervened and got the situation under control. If not for us, the tourists would have got a thorough thrashing for sure.

Tough job being a TTE.

On my last train journey, the 2AC TTE was trying very hard to sort out the RACs (which included my wife and I) on a fully-booked train. He was being followed up and down the corridor by a guy who was only waitlisted (should not even have been in the carriage) pestering him like a yapping dog. I'm quite surprised he didn't get himself thumped, but I guess it's all in a day's work for a TTE. Eventually, the TTE shouted at him to get off the train at the next station. If there had been railway police on the train I think they might have thrown him out --- but I think they would have waited for the train to stop.

True, but India has been known to attract Her fair share of the druggie &/or loonie types - which can inevitably lead to bouts of depression cum mood swings &/or spurts of madness. When this happens in a public place & perceived threatening with woman & children around .... a quick fix solution may be needed. What to do? Straight Jacket or expulsion.

I think that jumping on & off moving trains is not an act that is closely regulated in India either. Kind of cool in fact.Wouldn't want to get shoved if I were stoned nutter though ... totally different ballgame that.

Gandhi suffered a similar(unwarranted) train fate at one point I think.

You mean they don't lock the doors? No, they don't, but the obvious consequence of doing it at even a modest 30kph make "regulation" unnecessary. Not many people try to be that cool. Otherwise defined as dead.
