'Maureen has written to the British High Commission a letter, which was forwarded to me, saying that her son was a drug addict and was probably suffering from AIDS,'
A red herring if ever there was one. Has nothing to do with his murder but does serve the purpose of those wishing to blame the victim (see, he was a bad sort anyway)....

Saw a programme on a news channel today on the recent violent incidents involving foreigners, including this one.
Sadly, they concentrated more on the 'impact on tourism' than the fact that crimes may have been committed, and innocent people have suffered. |

Very sad.
As far as this case goes... Imagine a local cop, who's been happily rounding up the usual suspects, or just nabbing the person nearest the crime, year after year. Suddenly he finds himself the centre of world attention! I strongly suspect that a great deal of what the police have [been reported to have] said is absolute bullshit. But do they realise they are being reported worldwide? Of course, that's always assuming they did say what the reports said they said....

Dear Friends,
1. As a proud Indian, I own up & accept responsiblity, at least indirectly, for the unfortunate death of a fellow human being, in my country. 2. Indians are by nature, soft & friendly, and loyal in general. 3. However, in the absence of concerted efforts at education, Indians have yet to overcome the remanants of subversion that occured during the Colonial days. 4. Worst is the Indian buroucracy, which is just replacement of the White man by the Brown man. 5. While I continue to criticize Indian Govt machinary for the unfortunate incident, I apologise & sympathise with the unfortunate family that has suffered such a tragic loss. 6. Also, I appeal to the International community to NOT brand all Indians as negative. Please remember, that for 1 negative, there are 100 positives. 7. Please form buddy pairs with at least one local Indian before you come to India. We honour our guests, and do so traditionally. 8. It would be a good idea to come as a paying guest, first, and then tour the country. 9. Of course, I would refuse to accept anything even from a paying guest. Warmly, and with sorrow, Raj |

Your sympathy is appreciated, although I don't see why you should feel it any more for a foreigner than for one of your own countrymen.
I think you have not seen very much more of this board yet: I'm happy to be able to tell you that (just for instance) just because there is a current case involving the murder of around forty children, nobody here is saying that India is a land of child murderers. And, if they did, the moderators would have something to say at once! Some of the negative aspects of India, and some of the news stories of terrible things that happen here will be discussed on IndiaMike. In fact sometimes it seems necessary to counteract a rose-tinted impression that some foreigners have of the country. Why should you think that this makes us think that India is all bad? We don't. Is possible to continue to blame the Brits (yes, my ancestors, who are responsible for many post-colonial ills in the world) for the continued state of corruption in India, fifty years (a whole generation and more) after independence? Some of the officials into who's pockets my family has needed to fill for one reason or another in the past two years are of an age that only their grandparents would remember pre-1947. And, of course they are educated, or they would not have those jobs. |

Anyway, times of india reports today, narco analysis tests done last week, in Bangalore, on the six villagers arrested. ...results not released, yet...... I think, a very strange case, indeedy....

Hi!
1. I am an Indian living in India. 2. I have a sort of reasonable understanding of the Western mindset. 3. I want to bring out to all Westerners travelling to India, that tourism is not yet, and will not be for some more time, a priority for the Indian Govt. 4. It is really a disgrace to see guests from the West getting heckled & occassionally ill treated, with the Govt being spunkless to react. 5. Try to avoid coming to India, if possible, and voice your opinion to the Indian Govt Agencies wherever possible. 6. If you still want to come, then find yourself a travel companion, after having extensively interacting with the person online, or getting a referance from an Indian Friend or Official Indian Agency. 7. Please insist on a fulltime travel companion, as although it will be a bit more expensive, the companion will see you through the trouble spots. 8. Please do not visit India during & before elections. It is a bad time for all. Warm regards rps_gpr |

rps_gpr...
I don't know why, over eight months, you have chosen to make your only two contributions on this thread, but they are not particularly relevant. Nobody is going to avoid India because of one (or even two or three) tragedies in such a huge country. The idea of needing some sort of body guard or caretaker to visit or travel in this country is plainly absurd. However it is almost equally absurd for the traveller to expect the protection of the law in certain parts of India. You can find negative aspects of India on this site as well as positive, and recent threads covering current news items make it plain that, where law exists in those areas, it is the law of the mob. I'd say that 99% of visitors, travellers, ex-pat workers etc will never come closer to those events than newspaper reports. The government of India needs to put its own house in order, to the benefit of the whole country; it does not need to concentrate on a few tourists. Thank you for your concern. |

![]() I must say rps_gpr has given the strangest advice I've ever seen on this board. But it reminds me of how certain people in the travel business in India wildly exaggerate situations, to try and ensure that you are too afraid to do anything without being totally dependant on their "help" 24 hours a day. Especially this advice about election time -- yes I've seen a bit of election trouble but the fact is that election violence is a domestic affair and is never directed at tourists. The main problems with election times for foreigners are the inconveniences, such as a shortage of taxis due to them being requisitioned by the political parties. On the other hand, watching the cars and autos go by, packed with drunken young men and with sound systems on the roof, can be great fun. Anyway, if anyone wants to be too afraid to visit India, at least choose a relatively sensible reason, such as tropical disease or traffic accidents, rather than an isolated incident that happened to one person who strayed a long way off the beaten track. |
