Times of India, Sunday, June 25
Orissa Institute of Maritime and South East Asian Studies (OIMSEAS) has unearthed some 2,300 years-old artefacts in Jajpur district in the state which, it claimed, could change some historical narratives on the Ashokan period. "The description of Chinese piligrim Hieun-Tsang about Ashoka that he had constructed 10 stupas in Odra country where Buddha had preached may come true. Earlier, historians refused to accept the narrative. We have already analysed five stupas and found three more similar structures," OIMSEAS Director Debaraj Pradhan said here. Thanks Aztec!
I've cut the article, as we should only post quotes here, along with a link to the source, for copyright reasons. |

Aztec,
Very interesting article. I've been following some of the Ashoka's Stupas here and there. Obviously not far from this Jajpur district I've visited Dhauli. Thanks for sharing. Jorge |

*Very* cool, thanks for the notice. It's amazing how we (or they) just keep finding new (old) stuff that refutes previous beliefs...exciting. Maybe Orissa can get in on the Buddhist pilgrimage tourism (lucrative packages a la Lumbini, Gaya, Sarnath etc for the Taiwanese, southeast Asian, Japanese Buddhist crowds). Andhra is getting their act together on this front as well.

Thanks for the link, LonelyAztec, and it sure is interesting to read about these old (new) finds!!! I have been recently reading about the Buddhist art in India and this seems pretty interesting stuff. Would love to visit and see for myself too. After seeing the Stupas in Sanchi, Sarnath and Nala Sopara near Mumbai too, I find it will be a good opportunity for the Government to add to the tourist circuit and include these places on their maps too.
And good to see you online, Sirensongs, hope you've recovered from your eye infection now. Cheers, Aadil.
