How does this threat compare to Majnu ka Tilla? In Dec '06, one guy told me that MkT was already obliterated, and I didn't have time margins left to explore it myself. I still see lodging recommendations there on IM, so what's the current state?

Hehehe it's not exactly a shanty town, and it's not exactly the 'real India' as opposed to anything else. Is there such a thing?

Maybe the real India, going on numbers alone, is rural and unseen by most travellers, Indian or firang.

I think Pahar Ganj is a pretty dirty area, and not anywhere I would choose to hang out in Delhi, but I still find myself there from time to time. And it's nice to have something so lively near the station. At the samt time, the developers in NCR are firghtening and I would be horrified to see even more people shuffled out of their homes to make room for more boring and sterile high rises to accomodate the needs of the booming middle class hyper-consumer.
