Delhi, Mumbai May Be Attacked by Al-Qaeda, U.S. Says

Delhi, Mumbai May Be Attacked by Al-Qaeda, U.S. Says (Update5)

Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Al-Qaeda members may carry out bomb attacks in New Delhi and Mumbai before India's Independence Day celebrations on Aug. 15, the U.S. Embassy said, a month after the South Asian nation experienced its worst act of terrorism.

U.S. citizens should maintain a `low profile'' in India because of the risk of attacks by foreign terrorists on airports, hotels, markets and government offices, the embassy said in an advisory from New Delhi today.

Indian authorities have been on high alert since a series of explosions on trains and railway stations in Mumbai, the nation's financial capital, on July 11 killed at least 182 people. The danger of another attack during India's 60th Independence Day celebration in New Delhi has intensified after the U.K. police yesterday foiled a terrorist plot in London with suspected al-Qaeda links.

Why not? Their forefathers came on a jihad - raped, pillaged, conquered, then divided the country .... still didn't get enough .... now they will terrorize anyone and everybody till they get what they want - Kashmir.

If the US government had any actual understanding of India and the challenges it has faced from terrorism over time, it would know that an "Al Qaeda" attack is highly unlikely. There are plenty of other terrorists groups that would like to cause trouble in India, but bin Laden's group is not at the top of the list.

I thought Al Qaeda is operating in Karachi these days? Just a hop skip and a jump away .... anyway the name Al Qaeda is a moniker for all terrorist activity and gets the point across much better to Americans . I can't see the majority of Americans paying any attention to (much less even having heard about) a terrorist alert for Lashkar-e-Tayyiba or Jaish-e-Mohammed.

All true, Peak, but is it too much to ask for some intellectual honesty from the State Department?

One side of my says getting the facts right is very important ... the other side asks why do we glorify these terrorists groups anyway and perpetuate their existance by acknowledging them in such formal ways. They must love that and boost their ego and determination and spawn others to copy. One thing is for sure - if it is not al quada - then perhaps it is al qaeda inspired, al quada funded, or an Al Quada sympathizer or Al Qaeda copycat. Mumbai Train attacks certainly fell into one of the above .. no matter what "group" or "covey of pigeons" actually carried it out.

It has to do with not spreading wanton fear, which is what George Bush's terrorpalooza is all about. If there is a genuine al Qaeda threat in India, then this warning would be the first time that has been acknowledged. There were terror incidents in India long before anyone had ever heard of bin Laden, and there will be terrorist attacks all over the world, for one reason or another, long after he is dead.

The terrorist groups on the subcontinent haven't been interested in the meddling of an Arab sheikh; they have their own sources of funding and their own agendas (they are not interested in some airy Caliphate, expelling infidels from Arabia, or murdering Americans and Jews). They also prefer not to have the US breathing down their necks, which is one reason they shun extra-regional support and money.

It would be a pretty big deal, a real shift, if there were a bona fide al Qaeda planned and funded attack in India, which involved local people--Indians--as the attackers. So far, no India national has ever been discovered as a member of al Qaeda.

That news story quoted in the OP mentions "a terrorist plot in London with suspected al-Qaeda links." That hasn't been proven yet. The perpetrators were Pakistanis and Brits of Pakistani origin. Maybe they have ties to al Qaeda, maybe they don't. But they don't need anything al Qaeda could give them (money, training, motivation) to have carried out their attacks. All that stuff is readily available in Pakistan.
