Cholera outbreak in West Orissa

There is a major outbreak of cholera and gastroenteritis in areas of western Orissa where the "tribal tours" operate, with reports of over 100 dead and thousands taken ill. (Every report I read gives different figures and information though.)

If you are travelling in districts of Rayagada, Koraput, Kalahandi or Gajapati districts, and have not been vaccinated against cholera, avoid food and drink in rural areas.

However, there is no need to avoid the region altogether: the disease is mainly occurring in isolated tribal villages, and as a tourist you would mostly be staying in towns such as Rayagada and Jeypore which are not currently affected.

In a month IŽll be travelling to Bastar district in Chhattisgarh. Jeypore is only 80 km from Jagdalpur. Now I have two or three interesting things to worry: Naxalites terrorist, Salwa Judum para-police and since today Cholera

Just don't accept a drink of water from anyone holding a lathi or a gun and you'll be fine!

Take some antibiotics with you or get them when you arrive in India! Ask the folks at the travel clinic which ones are used for cholera.
